Game Pulse: 1985 Season Set

The year the all-time hit record fell, a 20-year-old had the best pitching season anyone had seen in decades, and one team came back from three games to one twice in the same October. This set brings the complete 1985 professional baseball season to Game Pulse — all 26 teams, every player, and 26 authentic ballpark cards reflecting the quirks and dimensions of the era's classic venues.

Every card is generated from actual 1985 season statistics. Batter and pitcher ratings are built from real performance data across the full season, with park factors computed from each stadium's run environment — so Bret Saberhagen's card reflects his Cy Young year at 21, and Royals Stadium plays the way it played.

On September 11, in front of his hometown, Pete Rose lined a single to left-center off Eric Show for the 4,192nd hit of his career and passed Ty Cobb at the top of a list nobody thought would ever move. He was 44 years old, managing the club, and writing his own name into the lineup card. Every one of those at-bats is baked into his card.

Dwight Gooden was 20 years old and unhittable. He went 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and 268 strikeouts, swept the pitching Triple Crown, threw 16 complete games and eight shutouts, and became the youngest Cy Young winner in the history of the award. There has not been a season quite like it since. Hand him the ball and find out what your lineup can do with him.

A Season Full of Legends

1985 was packed with milestones and stars at their peak. Don Mattingly drove in 145 runs with 35 home runs and 48 doubles for the AL MVP. Willie McGee hit .353 with 216 hits and 18 triples for the NL MVP. Bret Saberhagen won 20 games and the AL Cy Young before his 22nd birthday. George Brett hit .335 with 30 home runs and turned the ALCS on its ear. Wade Boggs collected 240 hits and a .368 batting title. Rookie Vince Coleman stole 110 bases, and Ozzie Guillen took AL Rookie of the Year. Rickey Henderson scored 146 runs and stole 80 bases in his first year in New York. And the record book kept turning: Tom Seaver won his 300th game, and Rod Carew collected his 3,000th hit on the very same afternoon in August; Nolan Ryan struck out his 4,000th batter in July, and 46-year-old Phil Niekro threw a shutout on the last day of the season for win number 300. Cal Ripken Jr., Eddie Murray, Mike Schmidt, Dale Murphy, Tony Gwynn, Ozzie Smith — every star's real 1985 performance is here, card for card.

Relive the 1985 World Series

Kansas City Royals vs. St. Louis Cardinals. The I-70 Series, and the second time that October the Royals climbed out of a three-games-to-one hole. Game 6 came down to a ninth inning that people are still arguing about — a call at first base, a rally that shouldn't have happened, and a 2-1 win that forced a seventh game. Then Saberhagen shut the door for good in an 11-0 Game 7 and took the World Series MVP. The road there was just as good: Ozzie Smith's walk-off homer in NLCS Game 5 and Jack Clark's blast in Game 6 got St. Louis in, and Kansas City had already run down Toronto from 3-1 to get there. Replay it batter by batter, manage either side, or run the series a few dozen times and see whether the Cardinals close it out in six.
