What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“SHOOTOSYNTHESIS is already playable from start to finish: a seven-day siege that ends with a boss drawn at random from two, a six-mission solo campaign, thirteen plant species, and online co-op for up to four farmers.

I'm going through Early Access because what's left to do can't be done alone in a corner. A co-op game gets balanced by many players, over hundreds of runs, on very different machines. That's exactly what your feedback will give me.

My goals during Early Access:

- Refine the difficulty curve of the seven days, so that every wave brings its own threat. Right now, the mid-game waves still feel too alike.
- Balance co-op for three and four players: there are far more plants on screen, and that's impossible to test without you.
- Vary how runs unfold, so that no two games ever play out the same way.
- Add new plants and consumables.
- Fix bugs and improve performance based on what you report.

My commitment: I will keep developing SHOOTOSYNTHESIS throughout Early Access, with regular updates, all the way to the full release. I read your feedback on the Steam forums, and every change that comes out of it will be announced in the patch notes.

The game is built. Early Access is about making it fair, varied and solid, together with you.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I'm aiming for eight to twelve months.

I'd rather release the full game once all 7 waves are in a great place, and especially once the gameplay feels varied and properly randomized from one run to the next.

And also after applying your feedback regarding bugs, improvements, and balancing.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here's what I'm currently working on:

- Tuning the difficulty curve across all 7 waves, one by one, based on your feedback.
- Improving variety and discovery during runs: each wave will have its own structure and duration.

This is by far the biggest thing separating the game as it is today from its final version.

- Adding more plants and consumables.
What you see today is where we are now, not where we plan to stop!
- Steam achievements.
- Potentially Steam weapon skins that could be traded on the Community Market and stored in your Steam inventory.

None of this is a promise of a specific release date.
This is where we're heading, and we'll keep you updated along the way.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All 7 waves can be played from start to finish, solo or in co-op, all the way to the boss.

What's in the game today:

- A whole bunch of enemies: some have long reach, some explode, others hide in the environment until you get too close...
- An arsenal: a few weapons are available from the start, while others are unlocked by playing or found while exploring.
- Mutants, which collapse into stumps instead of dying.
- The Lotus Ball: five health bars and four legs you'll have to rip off one by one.
- A complete battlefield: ruins to search, mystery crates, hideouts that trigger ambushes, and a locked area that can be opened by paying.
- Online co-op for up to four players, with direct invites from your Steam friends list.
- Full controller support.
- The game in twenty languages.

What's not in the game yet: Steam achievements and cloud saves.

Also planned: Steam skins and cosmetic items.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will increase when the game leaves Early Access, once the content and difficulty are where we want them to be.

If you buy the game during Early Access, you'll get the full game on release day at no additional cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Three ways, and the first one matters most.

The Steam forums and our community group, where balance IS the topic. It's your disagreements we're after: which wave is the wall, which weapon is quietly the best, which plant nobody respects enough.

The game itself. A run fits in about half an hour, so a precise piece of criticism can be checked in one sitting, on your side as much as ours.

What we ship. When a change comes out of a discussion, we say so in the patch notes, by name. It's the only way to know whether the time you spent writing to us was worth anything.”

About This Game

The Beginning...

A laboratory experiment went wrong...

Those clever scientists tried once again to play with the rules of life, and once again, things got out of hand.

Now, the plants are in control!

And they fully intend to recover the Photosynthesis Core to become even stronger. That's where you come in!

The army contacted you and your friends to defend the Core and save the world.

You're a farmer, you know plants by heart, you're the man for the job!

They provided you with custom-made weapons to take down the enemy! You have seven waves to hold out.

HOLD THE CORE

Every wave is dangerous, the plants attack the Core directly, so you have to stop them!

They come from everywhere, so use the detector at the top of the screen to see which direction the plants are coming from.

One three-minute break will be granted before wave 3. It'll give you time to explore the surrounding area and find upgrades to help you survive, repair the Core and heal yourself if needed.

Repairing the Core costs 25 leaves for 10 HP.

MUTANTS ARE DIFFERENT

Other plants die instantly or explode, but mutants are going to surprise you.

Three times bigger than the others, and watch out, because they don't die.

They must be uprooted within twenty seconds... otherwise they'll come back to life and keep attacking you...

Leaves are the currency / fuel you'll use throughout the entire match. They can be collected from monsters and chests.

DOZENS OF DIFFERENT ENEMIES TO RUIN YOUR DAY...

  • The Moss attacks in groups. A burst of bullets can fly right over it: to get rid of it, you'll sometimes have to jump on it.

  • The Rowan bombards you with berries from a distance, so don't stand still.

  • The Dandelion explodes when it dies, so run away while you still can, and the Crates will explode while running straight at you!

  • The Venus Flytrap hides, waits for you to walk past it and quietly wakes up to get you when you least expect it.

And if you survive that long, on the seventh wave you'll get to meet a cute little lotus ball:
Lotus Ball: six meters tall, five health bars and four legs that you'll have to rip off one by one.

Come oooon, can't we have a little fun? :p

A WIDE VARIETY OF WEAPONS

Pistol, revolver, shotgun, minigun, flamethrower... Each weapon has its own specialty and its own limitations.

Three weapons are available from the start. The others are unlocked as you play or can be discovered directly while exploring the map.

BATTLEFIELD

It stretches across nearly one hundred and eighty meters, with the Core at its center.

Around it, you'll find ruins to search, mystery crates containing random weapons, and locked areas that you can unlock during the game by paying with leaves.

Exploring can give you an advantage for the next wave. But every detour takes you farther away from the Core.

ALONE, OR WITH UP TO FOUR PLAYERS

The entire game can be played solo or online in co-op with up to four players.

Create a lobby and invite your friends directly through Steam, then organize yourselves: defend the Core, explore the surrounding area, uproot mutants... or try to do everything at the same time.

WHAT'S IN THE GAME TODAY

  • A complete seven-wave gameplay experience, from the first wave all the way to the final boss

  • Twelve enemy plant species with different behaviors

  • Weapons and a carrot grenade

  • Online co-op for 1 to 4 players

  • Day/night cycle, an additional area to unlock, ruins, hideouts and mystery crates

  • Persistent progression with new weapons to unlock from one game to the next

  • Full controller support and rebindable controls

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Part of the audio in this game is generated with AI: the music and some of the sound effects.

Part of the source code was also created with the help of AI during development, particularly to generate certain portions of code, fix errors, and assist with the implementation of certain features. The code used in the game is then reviewed, modified, and integrated manually.

Everything else is handmade: the monsters are drawn by hand and then recreated in 3D, the textures are hand-painted and sometimes slightly enhanced, the 3D models are procedural, every line of text in the game is written by me, the farmer's voice is mine, etc.
