What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I’ve learned something about investigations: sooner or later, you need another set of eyes.

Early Access lets players step into the case while there’s still plenty of road ahead. Feedback will help uncover bugs, rough edges, balance problems, and the little things that are hard to spot when you’ve been staring at the same evidence for too long.

The goal is simple: keep building the game, keep improving what’s already there, and let the people playing it have a voice while it takes shape.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Passion to remain in Early Access for roughly 18–24 months.

There’s no date circled in red on the calendar and no dame waiting at the train station with a stopwatch. Passion will remain in Early Access while the rest of the planned game is built, tested, polished, and ready to join the parts already available.

That 18–24 month window is our best estimate, not a deadline. We’d rather take the time the game needs than rush something out the door just to make a date.

When the case is finished, it’s finished.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access release represents roughly the first eighth of the planned game: the first town, its surrounding dungeons, and the opening portion of the story.

We plan for the finished game to contain seven additional town-and-dungeon sections, followed by optional dungeons and the final dungeon and confrontation. Along the way, the story, world, enemies, equipment, characters, and other content will continue to expand.

In short: the Early Access version is the opening of the case. The full version is the whole file.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version contains the first town and the dungeons associated with it, representing the opening portion of the planned game.

It is playable content rather than a prototype: exploration, story, combat, equipment, enemies, bosses, and the game’s core systems are already in place. But there’s a lot more city out there, and most of the story is still waiting in the dark.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yeah. The deeper you get into a case, the thicker the file becomes.

We plan to begin Early Access at a lower price and gradually increase the price as substantial new content is added. The final version is expected to cost more than the initial Early Access release.

Players who get involved early get the smaller price tag along with the smaller game. As the game grows, so will the price. The backrent doesn't pay itself.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“There’ll be an active Discord where players can talk about the game, report bugs, give feedback, discuss balance, and point out anything suspicious.

I’ll be paying attention.

Not every lead turns into something, and not every suggestion belongs in the final case file. But good feedback has a way of leaving fingerprints. Early Access players will have a direct line to the development process while Passion continues to grow.”

About This Game

A Strange Story in a Stranger Town

Passion is a story-driven, party-based JRPG inspired by the 16-bit era, mixing noir mystery, comedy, horror, and psychedelic weirdness.

You play as a private investigator who quickly makes one thing clear:

This isn't really his story.

What begins as an investigation gradually opens into something much stranger, as you explore an increasingly bizarre world filled with suspicious characters, dangerous places, and things that probably shouldn't exist.

Classic JRPG Combat, With More Control

Passion uses an ATB-inspired battle system built around giving you time to think without taking away the pressure of combat.

When a character is ready to act, the battle pauses. You can issue their command immediately, or hold their action and allow the rest of the party's gauges to fill, giving you control over when and how your team acts.

Combat emphasizes:

  • Status effects that actually matter

  • Elemental strengths and weaknesses

  • Party composition and character-specific abilities

  • Timing and action management

  • Preparation instead of simply grinding bigger numbers

Winning isn't just about having the highest stats. Knowing what you're fighting, and bringing the right tools for the job, can make all the difference.

Explore, Investigate, and Get Distracted

Travel through towns, dungeons, corrupted places, and other locations while uncovering what is happening around you.

Talk to people. Investigate suspicious situations. Find equipment and secrets. Wander off the obvious path.

As the game opens up, you'll have more freedom to decide where to go and what to pursue, with optional content and discoveries waiting for players willing to poke around.

Noir, Comedy, Horror, and Something Else Entirely

Passion doesn't stay in one genre for very long.

One moment you may be dealing with deadpan detective dialogue or an absurd situation in town. The next, something has gone profoundly wrong.

The game's 1990s-inspired world blends noir storytelling, comedy, horror, and psychedelic imagery with the structure of a classic console RPG.

Underneath all of it is a character-driven mystery about people pulled into something far stranger than they expected.
