What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Three Kingdoms Born is a character-driven strategy game that combines the role of a ruler managing a faction with the role of a commander overseeing battles.

The core mechanics and overall foundation of the game are already implemented and fully playable. However, as a solo developer, I want to continue refining the game together with the community through Early Access.

During Early Access, I plan to focus on improving the long-term balance between officers, troop types, operations, and stratagems; strengthening AI decision-making; refining the pacing of campaigns from the early game through the late game; improving UI readability; and polishing the quality of all five supported languages.

I also hope to reflect player feedback when deciding which additional rulers, scenarios, editing features, and quality-of-life improvements should be prioritized during development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The current plan is for Early Access to last approximately 6 to 12 months.

The actual duration may change depending on player feedback, system stability, the scope of balance adjustments, newly added content, and the areas that require the most attention after release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to preserve the core gameplay while offering a broader scope, more balanced systems, and a higher overall level of polish.

Early Access will begin with Sun Ce's conquest of Jiangdong campaign. By the time of the full release, I plan to add seven additional playable rulers: Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, Liu Biao, Ma Teng, and Gongsun Zan.

Additional scenarios, historical events, and alternate-history events are also planned.

The following features and improvements are currently planned during Early Access:

Gradually replacing shared portraits used by some secondary officers with unique portraits
Expanding and improving officer portrait variety and quality
Adding additional background music and situation-specific tracks
Expanding the current Korean opening and ending vocal songs with additional music and presentation for English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese audiences
A custom officer creation system
An officer editor allowing players to modify the abilities and selected settings of existing officers
The ability to replace existing officer portraits with user-selected images and restore the original portraits at any time
Continued improvements to combat balance and AI behavior
Improvements to late-game faction management and corps delegation
Improved UI guidance and information presentation
Continued localization improvements across all five supported languages

These represent the current development direction. Specific features, details, and priorities may change based on player feedback and development circumstances.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version includes a main campaign in which you play as Sun Ce, the Little Conqueror, and attempt to unify a realm consisting of 33 cities.

All major gameplay systems are implemented, and the campaign can be played from beginning to unification.

<Officer and City Management>

The game features 630 historical officers.

You can recruit officers, assign them to cities and armies, and manage their loyalty. Officers who feel neglected may betray you and even take part of a city's wealth with them.

Each officer has unique attributes, proficiency across 12 troop types, traits, personality characteristics, and dedicated duel skills.

Players can manage agriculture, commerce, recruitment, training, and public order. As your territory grows, portions of your domain and officer management can be delegated to corps.

Major officers currently use unique portraits. However, individual portraits for all 630 officers are still being produced. As a result, some secondary officers currently share temporary portraits.

These shared portraits will gradually be replaced with unique portraits throughout Early Access.

<Real-Time Battles and Three Major Wars>

Battles are not based on directly controlling every unit.

Instead, players prepare their forces by selecting unit composition, troop types, operations, and formations before battle. During combat, the player acts as a commander, intervening at key moments by deploying reserves, boosting morale, or making important tactical decisions.

Troop-type matchups, sieges, one-on-one duels between officers, battlefield conditions, and strategist-led stratagems can all influence the outcome.

The Battle of Guandu, the Battle of Red Cliffs, and the Anti-Hegemon Grand Coalition are three major large-scale conflicts featured in the game.

These are not simply fixed scripted events. Their participants and circumstances can change dynamically depending on the balance of power and political situation of the world.

<Additional Modes and Support>

The game also includes a standalone roguelike duel mode and global rankings for duel scores and campaign unification scores.

Five languages are currently supported:

Korean
English
Simplified Chinese
Traditional Chinese
Japanese

At present, the vocal opening and ending songs are available in Korean.

Additional music and presentation for other language audiences are planned to be added and refined during Early Access.

The current soundtrack is also not considered final. Additional background music will be added over time to strengthen the atmosphere of campaigns, battles, and major events.

All core systems are currently playable. During Early Access, development will focus primarily on balance, AI intelligence, UI readability, localization quality, music and portrait improvements, and the pacing of the mid- and late-game campaign.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access price reflects the amount of content and overall level of completion currently available.

The price is planned to increase when the game reaches its full release, reflecting the addition of new playable rulers, scenarios, editing features, expanded content, and improvements to the overall quality of the game.

If a price increase is decided, it will be announced in advance so players have sufficient notice.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback will be collected through the Steam Discussion forums, announcements, patch notes, and direct feedback reports.

I will be paying particular attention to feedback regarding:

Bugs and progression-blocking issues
Confusing or inconvenient UI
Balance between officers, troop types, operations, and stratagems
AI decision-making in warfare, domestic management, and officer assignment
Late-game campaign management and corps delegation
Translation and font issues across all five supported languages
Officer portraits and music
Demand for custom officers and officer editing features
The rulers and scenarios players would most like to see added

Community feedback will be one of the main factors used to determine development priorities throughout Early Access.”

About This Game

History Sets the Stage. You Decide What Happens Next.

《Three Kingdoms Born》 is a character-driven strategy game set in the chaos of the Three Kingdoms era. Choose a ruler, lead your faction, recruit more than 450 historical officers, develop your cities, and shape your own history through diplomacy and war.

Every officer is more than a set of numbers. Each has their own abilities · unit aptitudes · traits · personality · signature skills, and can be appointed to important offices, placed in command of armies, or assigned as a strategist. Officers grow through battles, duels, and their duties, but they also age with time. If loyalty falls too far, an officer may eventually abandon your faction.

Officers Who Live, Grow, and Change

Officers gain experience and grow through battles, duels, and their duties in your cities. But time passes for everyone. As they age, even once-great warriors will gradually begin to lose Martial and Leadership ability.

Loyalty also matters. Neglect an officer for too long and their commitment may fade. If loyalty falls far enough, they may even take what they can and leave your faction behind.

Captured officers are not recruited with a single click either.

Cause · Goodwill · Wealth · Personal Ties · Intimidation

Choose how you want to persuade them. The result can also change depending on who you send as your envoy.

Command the Battle, Not Every Soldier

A battle begins before your armies ever meet.

At the war council, assign your officers, choose a formation and operation, and appoint a strategist.

Once the battle begins, you do not micromanage every individual soldier. Instead, read the flow of the battlefield and intervene when the moment matters.

Commit reserves, change positions, switch operations, or unleash a stratagem.

Fire Attack · Flood Attack · Ambush · False Reports · Provocation can shake the battle before the lines even fully collide.

Terrain, weather, 11 unit aptitudes, officer ability, fatigue, morale, Hero Skills, and strategist abilities all affect the outcome.

And when great generals meet, a duel can suddenly change the course of battle.

Rule, Negotiate, and Deceive

Develop your cities and decide what to build in their limited facility slots.

Recruit and train troops, develop units suited to each region, and complete Military Reforms to upgrade specific unit types across your entire faction into elite forces.

Diplomacy is not simply a button with a success chance. It is a negotiation with another ruler.

See why a rival trusts or fears you, choose the right envoy, and propose gifts · non-aggression pacts · alliances · joint attacks · reinforcement requests · threats · surrender.

If your proposal falls only slightly short, the other ruler may demand gold, provisions, or another diplomatic concession instead of simply rejecting you.

Send spies behind enemy walls, then use incitement · sabotage · sow discord to weaken them from within.

At the Black Market, you can also trade for rare treasures whose true identity and effects may not be fully revealed at first.

As your territory expands, entrust distant fronts to legion commanders, rise through the ranks, and eventually found your own state and proclaim yourself Emperor.

A Realm That Moves Without You

The world does not wait for the player.

AI rulers develop their cities, search for talent, use intelligence and stratagems, gather armies, and attack where they see weakness.

When enemies approach, nearby cities may send reinforcements. Weaker factions may even cooperate to resist a stronger power.

Because each ruler has their own level of aggression and decision-making tendencies, the same campaign does not always unfold the same way.

Each month, a front-page style report summarizes the most important events across your faction, the borderlands, and the wider realm.

Guandu · Red Cliffs · the Anti-Hegemon Coalition are not simply fixed historical events.

The factions involved and the fronts that emerge depend on the balance of power that has developed in your campaign, and the results of the battles can reshape what comes next.

History provides the stage. What follows is written by you and the factions struggling across the realm.

Duel Mode and Global Rankings

A separate roguelike Duel Mode is also available outside the main campaign.

Choose a single warrior and fight through increasingly powerful opponents to see how far one blade can carry you.

You can also compare your results with other players through the Duel rankings and Unification records.
