What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Development of Skipchaser has been an open process from the beginning. From our initial "game jam" release, to our internal beta and now Early Access we've relied on player input to build a game worth playing.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our plan is to to do 12 rounds of early access updates--each two weeks in length. This should put our Early Access period at 6 months total. We have the funding to sustain this level of development.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version has the basic features we want in the game, however we want to expand those features and add more content, such as:

  • Act 2 and 3 will continue the storyline
  • More missions and random variety
  • More gun and armor pieces and recipes
  • More enemy types and bosses
  • Local co-op
  • Additional dialog and cutscenes
  • Subtitle localization

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, we feel the game has many hours of gameplay and is both enjoyable and (relatively) bug free.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We may gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features, but it will not be significantly more than our launch price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Our hope is to find players who love twin stick shooters and action RPGs and suck all the feedback we can out of them.”

Overhauling SKIPCHASER in 2018

Let’s be clear, SKIPCHASER isn’t what anyone would consider a success story. It started as a Ludum Dare game jam entry in April of 2016, went into Steam Early Access March of 2017, and one year later hasn’t really hit its stride as anything more than a colorful but simplistic rogue-like twin-stick shooter.

Despite being featured on (thanks BTW) and getting some minor press and streaming play, purchases have been in the low hundreds and our team’s vision to build “Space Diablo” isn’t in the cards--mainly the financial cards.

Don’t get me wrong, our team at Ponywolf clearly isn’t profit focused--a vast majority of our games are free with no ads. We also have released thousands of lines of code to help the gaming community on the whole. Simply put, we build games that we want to play, but at some point a game needs to be sustainable.

Up to now, this statement reads like a studio that’s planning on canceling their flagship title--but this is not the case. During the concepting phase of SKIPCHASER we experimented with many different kinds of game play options, from side scrolling, to click mashing, to what you see today. One of those experiments was a turn-based, drag-to-move control scheme that worked well in both mouse based and touch screen environments.

We lifted some of that code and implemented it in the re-release of 1-800-Monsters mainly the ability to drag the mouse to control where the hero character walks.

That said, I’m happy to announce our intent to overhaul SKIPCHASER into a more unique turn based action game and deliver more content updates in 2018. Those of you who supported us in Early Access, this branch of the game will remain available indefinitely, and you will hopefully get another great experience set in the SKIPCHASER universe.

About This Game

In a universe full of genetic diversity, both flesh and metal, SKIPCHASERs are skilled trackers and deadly assassins. Methodically gather information on your missions while efficiently destroying anyone who gets in your way. In the service of M.O.T.H.E.R you will hunt indiscriminately while using your talents to complete the job you were uniquely born to do.

SKIPCHASERS are a secretive group of gunmen scattered throughout the known universe. Combat ready and rapidly deployable, they have a reputation as ruthless paramilitary soldiers. Little is known about their origins, and less about their employer, the corporation know as M.O.T.H.E.R.

Contracts will send you all over the planet from salted wastelands to the bowels of the element mines long since abandoned. Here you will encounter all manner of human, alien and robotic brutes, making sure to keep your trigger finger ready at all times. With procedurally generated enemies it could be hours before you encounter the same one twice.

A SKIPCHASER's best friend is his weapon, so it should be completely customizable. With thousands of possible combinations you can use the smithing system to create just the right ordnance for any enemy or situation.

SKIPCHASERs and enemies deal damage in three different types: fire, bio and cryo. Each damage type has a counter and can be applied to guns and gear. Choosing the right gun and armor to clear out a room adds the right amount strategy to this action experience.
