What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“No real product is complete till a customer or player tells us what we are missing. Or missed. We want to hear directly from players on what we can do to make the game better, faster. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“3 weeks depending the level of interest, the depth, intensity and brutality of the feedback. Also a function of how much feedback we will be able to take before we reach the threshold of heartbreak or we can implement in the full released version of the game. ”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is a fully playable game. It allows a player to raise capital, research a selected game genre, project estimated unit sold and revenues, hire and fire team memebers, take management interventions to improve productivity, take the design challenge, fine tune launch decisions and play the post launch mini game. For a single game building quest (level) challenge. A single quest challenge that can be attempted as many times as the player wants.

The full version of the game has 5 quests, rather than one. 5 different challenges or levels that emphasize a new and specific aspect of the Indie game development and building challenge.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is a fully playable game. It allows a player to raise capital from investors, research a selected game genre, project estimated unit sold and revenues, hire and fire team memebers, take management interventions to improve team productivity, take the multiple design challenge, fine tune launch decisions and play the post launch mini game. For a single game building quest (level) challenge.

A single quest challenge that can be attempted as many times as the player wants to play the game. There is no restriction or limitation on the number of times a player can play the game.

We have play tested it internally and externally for the last 4 weeks. It is playable, bug free and complete as a self contained challenge. We have gone through 4 weeks of external playtesting outside of steam as of the date of writing these lines. Before the game hits early access, we would have completed another 4 weeks of playtesting on Steam with a broader and wider group of players. ”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The full version of the game would be priced higher than the early access version.

We plan to give all early access participants, access to the first release of the full version of the game when it is released on Steam.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have setup a Discord server to invite, receive feedback, commentary, ideas and suggestions and a feature wishlist that players can vote on. In addition to one on one engagement with the core team the designed, built and tested the game. ”

About This Game

The Studio is a minimalist, 2D, Text based strategy simulation about building games. What does it take to design, build, collate, publish and distribute a game. By a small team with two to four resources that just opened doors for business. It is an underdog story.

When we started thinking about building the Studio, we wanted the game to reflect our own journey. What did it take for us to take a step on the wild side and bet everything on building the game? Where did we get stuck the most? The questions that led to the wildest and longest debates? The wall we could never breach?

Raise capital, hire resources, do market research, pick a genre, a market segment, a target language, make design decisions, pick the right playtest and launch model and the let the simulation run. Look at how well or not well you did, tweak your resource mix to eck out higher productivity with the team you picked.

The core game loop is trying to get to the finish line without getting killed in the process as a business. Rather than bullets, arrows or axes, its running out of runway that gets everyone at the end.

The game forces you to make choices at each stage. Capital and turns are finite. They run out. The challenge is to build and ship a game that generate enough revenue to break even at the end of your quest. Each attempt is scored so you get a sense of how far off from the finishing line you were. The objective it to not just reach the finish line, but to cross it in style.

A game is not about downloads or playtime, rankings, sales or technology. It is more than resolution, levels, frameworks, tools and technology. Like everything else we value, cherish and appreciate, games are about meaning. Sometimes about seeking meaning; sometimes about redefining it.  How do you convert a click, or a set of pixels into a portal to a different dimension of imagination. How do you link that click to the higher purpose of finding meaning? What happens when you do that?

Can one feel all that with a game driven by just numbers? Hyper realistic numbers, but still numbers at the end? That is the challenge we were trying to solve?

You decide if we managed to solve it or failed miserably.
