What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Flames Betwixt is TCubedStudios’ first game, inspired by a love of classic party-based RPGs. We’re building a game where choosing your skills, assembling your party, and adapting your tactics are central to the adventure.

Early Access gives us the opportunity to develop that experience with player feedback. We want to learn which builds players enjoy, how AI companions perform, and where combat feels rewarding or frustrating, both solo and in co-op.

Our goal is challenging combat with room for experimentation and a wide range of effective builds. Your experiences will help us refine skill balance, party behaviour, progression, and encounters as we work on the campaign.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our current target is to leave Early Access by the end of 2028. This is an estimate, and the timeline may change as development progresses and we respond to player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan for the full version to include a complete campaign spanning multiple acts, expanding beyond the opening areas available in Early Access.

Alongside the campaign, we aim to add more areas to explore, quests, enemies, equipment, and skills that offer meaningful choices for your party. We also plan to refine combat balance, companion AI, co-op play, and presentation throughout development.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The early game is playable, with quests to complete and areas to explore, though the campaign is still unfinished. A lot of our work so far has gone into combat and giving you control over how your party fights.

There are currently 123 skills across six professions, with primary and secondary profession combinations. You choose eight skills to take with you and assign attribute points to suit your build. There are also 94 equipment items, including weapons, armor, offhands, and bags, alongside identification, salvaging, and glyph upgrades.

You can play with friends, recruit AI heroes, or bring both. There are six professions: Warrior, Ranger, Arcanist, Paladin, Necromancer, and Voidwitch. You can combine a primary and secondary profession, assign attribute points, and choose eight skills to take with you.

Heroes have their own equipment, attributes, and skill bars. You can set priorities for when they heal, attack, interrupt, or revive someone. You can also tell them where to stand, which enemy to target, or when to use a particular skill.

Other features already in place include:

- Ranger pet taming and Necromancer minions.
- Equipment drops, identification, salvaging, and weapon upgrades using glyphs.
- Merchants and trading between players.
- A quest journal with tracked objectives.
- A day and night cycle, with floating lanterns and torches you can light.
- Combat logs and damage and healing meters.
- Controller controls and menus, which we’re still refining.

There is more work ahead on the areas themselves, the art, and the amount of content available. Skills and encounters still need balancing, and you will run into bugs. What’s playable now is a small part of the campaign we want to make, with much of the party building already there to try.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We currently plan a modest price increase when the game leaves Early Access. Keeping Flames Betwixt affordable is important to us, and we intend to keep any increase small.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a discord page where we are actively posting development updates, and taking feedback from players based on these updates.”

About This Game

Gather your party

Flames Betwixt is an isometric co-op RPG about building characters that work well together, taking heavy inspiration from Guild Wars 1. (Not affiliated with ArenaNet or NCSoft, just raised on their work.)

Build a party of up to eight players and heroes. Bring your friends, fill the empty slots with companions you recruit along the way, or play the whole campaign solo with seven heroes under your command.

Eight skills, and that's it

Pick a primary profession and a secondary, then build an eight-skill bar from their combined pool. You can change your build in towns and outposts. Once you head out, you’re committed.

Six professions to choose from:

  • Warrior. Heavy armor and a place on the frontline. Build Valor by landing hits, then spend it on martial skills.

  • Ranger. Fight with a bow, cripple and poison your enemies, and bring a beast you charmed in the wild.

  • Paladin. Hit hard with holy magic, enchant your allies, and keep the party standing with healing and protection.

  • Arcanist. Fire, frost, and big numbers, with Exhaustion waiting if you get greedy.

  • Necromancer. Turn the corpses on the floor into an army. Drain life, lay curses, and wield cold death magic.

  • Voidwitch. Stack hexes, recover energy by interrupting enemy spells, and summon familiars to bolster your spellcasting.

Your primary determines your attribute caps, passives, and armor. Your secondary opens up another profession’s skills. A Warrior/Necromancer and a Necromancer/Warrior can have very different jobs in a party.

Think about what everyone is bringing before you leave. A resurrection skill can get a fallen ally back into the fight. If the whole party wipes, you’ll respawn at the nearest resurrection shrine with a minor death penalty, and some time to rethink your choices.

You cap at level 20

Reaching level 20 is a brisk journey. After that, progression is about finding more options: new skills, different profession pairings, and inscriptions and glyphs to modify your armor and weapons.

You’ll keep finding ways to change your build long after you’ve finished leveling.

Combat gives you plenty to work with: conditions, hexes, enchantments, interrupts, and energy management. Watch an enemy’s cast bar, interrupt the spell your party can’t afford to take, or strip away the enchantment keeping a foe alive.

Command your party with tactical prioritization

You choose each hero’s skills, attributes, and priorities using gambits: an ordered list of instructions that tells them what to do and when.

An ally drops below half health? Heal them. Someone goes down? Try to revive them. Nothing more urgent? Attack your target.

The order matters. Put reviving above healing, and your hero will prioritize getting someone back up over tending to the wounded.

You can adjust your heroes at an outpost. In the field, they work with what you brought, same as you.

Nightfall

The day/night clock keeps running while you explore. At night, enemies have more health and hit harder, and you may encounter different foes. The loot is better, too, and some items grow stronger after dark.

Push through it or wait for morning.

Co-op Campaign

Host a campaign for you and your friends to drop straight into 8 party slots. For any slot nobody takes, a hero can fill. Or play the entire thing solo running seven companions yourself!

The world

The Flame is going out, and the Fell are awakening.

You have been summoned from beyond the Augur’s Rift. The Order was there to guide you, but none can say who you were before.

Explore with the companions you meet along the way, and uncover what brought you here and what’s waking as the Flame fades.

About the Developer
Flames Betwixt is a solo passion project. I loved the deep theory-crafting and horizontal progression of classic 2000s RPGs, and I wanted to build a modern co-op experience that captured that same magic.
