What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are using Early Access so players can use the core map creation and simulation tools while we continue improving usability, stability, performance, and supporting features.
Because this is a niche tool/game, player feedback is especially useful for identifying confusing workflows, missing quality-of-life features, map data issues, and areas where the experience needs clearer guidance before full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Early Access to last less than one year, but the timing may change depending on development progress, testing, and player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current build already contains the core mapbuilding experience we want players to evaluate during Early Access. We plan to keep that core direction intact while refining usability, stability, presentation, and supporting systems based on development needs and player feedback.

We plan to continue improving the map creation workflow, including additional visual tools, usability improvements, and quality-of-life features that may make repetitive tasks easier.

We plan to continue exploring ways to add more depth to the gameplay loop, with the exact scope depending on Early Access feedback, testing, and development priorities.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version includes the main map drawing and building drawing tools, along with the core simulation depth that is currently planned for the foundation of the game. The build is playable, but it still needs more quality-of-life improvements, polish, performance work, and general stability improvements.
One area still being improved is world map data packaging. The installed size is currently about 60 GB for the US data, and we plan to keep looking for practical ways to reduce the disk footprint where possible.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We are not currently planning to change the price when the game leaves Early Access, but that may be revisited if the scope changes significantly during development.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use player feedback to help prioritize improvements during Early Access, especially around usability, map creation workflow, performance, tutorials, and which tools are most valuable to expand next.

Players will be able to share feedback through the Steam forums, Steam reviews, bug reports, and community discussions. We expect to review recurring feedback patterns, bug reports, and examples of maps or workflows that players find confusing or limiting.
Community feedback may influence the order in which we improve existing tools, add quality-of-life features, adjust balance, expand supported workflows, and refine tutorials. While we have our own development direction for the game, Early Access feedback will help us decide which areas need the most attention before full release.”

About This Game

MapCity is a city-building sandbox that works the way a map does. The whole game is one big map. Pan anywhere, zoom in, and draw your city into existence. It is as much a drawing tool as it is a game.

Build anything, at basically any size — a farm track, a fishing village, a dense downtown, a highway network spanning a continent. Everything on the map is an object you can place, edit or delete, including everything that was already there. No unlock trees, no budget to babysit, no fail state. Layer tools give you full control over every graphical object when you want it — and you can ignore them completely when you don't.

Open a real place and start editing. Import map data from practically anywhere in the world — real roads, rivers, coastlines, terrain and towns. Load the US map, delete any city and build your own in its place, or keep what's there and extend it.

Blank terrain, no rules. Draw every road yourself and make your maps as detailed or as simple as you like. The building tools are realistic, but they never demand realism — they just make big builds easy.

MapCity is built for scale. Zoom from a single driveway out to a whole region and keep building — networks of towns and cities on any continent, on real-world terrain. Zoom out far enough and your work simply looks like a real map. Because that's what it is.

If you've used a modern web map, you already know the controls. Drawing roads feels like drawing — snapping, curves, grids and plenty of quality-of-life features, built for making large things quickly without fighting the camera or the UI.

A light simulation, when you want one

Underneath the sandbox there's an optional city game: population, density, demand and traffic, simulated as heatmaps over your real road network. It's deliberately simple — no individual cars or citizens — and you can ignore it entirely and just build.

Honest notes

MapCity is new and in active development.

Feedback genuinely shapes what gets built next.

Full-world map data is big - some regions require installing free data modules from Steam.

Rendering very large or detailed maps can be slow on older systems.
