What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“MapCity will launch in Early Access so players can use the core map creation and simulation tools while I continue improving usability, stability, performance, and new features.
Because this is a niche tool/game, player feedback is especially useful for identifying confusing workflows, missing quality-of-life features, map data issues, and areas where the experience needs clearer guidance before full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I currently expect Early Access to last less than one year, but the timing may change depending on development progress, testing, and player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current build already contains the core mapbuilding experience we want players to evaluate during Early Access. We plan to keep that core direction intact while refining usability, stability, presentation, and supporting systems based on development needs and player feedback.

I plan to continue improving the map creation workflow, including additional visual tools, usability improvements, and quality-of-life features that may make repetitive tasks easier.

The ultimate direction of the game beyond the core sandbox is to be determined.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version includes the main map drawing and building drawing tools, along with the core simulation depth that is currently planned for the foundation of the game. The build is playable, but it still needs more quality-of-life improvements, polish, performance work, and general stability improvements.

One area still being improved is world map data packaging. The installed size is currently about 100 GB for the US data.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I don't currently plan to change the price when the game leaves Early Access, but that may be revisited if the scope changes significantly during development.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to use player feedback to help prioritize improvements during Early Access, especially around usability, map creation workflow, performance, tutorials, and which tools are most valuable to expand next.

Players will be able to share feedback through the Steam forums, Steam reviews, bug reports, and community discussions. I expect to review recurring feedback patterns, bug reports, and examples of maps or workflows that players find confusing or limiting.

Community feedback may influence the order in which I improve existing tools and features.”

About This Game

A city sandbox built around the map

In MapCity, the map itself is your canvas. You can create anything from a small riverside town to a dense city or a wider region of connected neighborhoods. Roads, buildings, land, water, and boundaries are objects you can place and edit directly on the map.

Drawing and editing tools

MapCity allows you to draw roads with curves, snapping, angle controls, and grids. Buildings, land, water, and boundaries can be placed and reshaped directly on the map. You can refine the geometry of a single block, then zoom out to see how its streets connect to the surrounding city.

Neighborhood development

Development tools can generate roads, parcels, and buildings across a selected area or alongside existing streets. Layout and building options let you shape the result, with a preview before you add it to the map. Every generated object remains editable, so you can develop a neighborhood as a whole and refine its individual streets and buildings afterward.

Map appearance

Layers, themes, and draw order give you control over how your map is presented. You can organize its contents and adjust the appearance while continuing to edit the roads, buildings, and landscape. Objects can be moved, reshaped, duplicated, or removed as your design evolves.

Focused on creation

MapCity combines city design with the flexibility of a drawing tool. The current experience focuses on creating and editing places, without a simulated city economy or population.

Optional map content

You can create blank maps without installing any DLCs. Optional map data downloads will be free and provide existing places to work with. These downloads require substantial additional storage; see each DLC’s requirements for details.

3D views

MapCity includes 3D views for exploring your creations from another perspective. These are still in development and can be enabled as an experimental feature in Settings.
