About This Game

Marginalia is a hex tactics SRPG about running a mercenary company and sending expeditions from a ruined border fort captured from the enemy.

Fight battles where allies and enemies act within the same turn, gather new companions and supplies, and develop the ruined fort into the base of your mercenary company.

It All Begins at a Ruined Border Fort

Your home is a border fort captured from the enemy only recently.

Its sections have collapsed, supplies are scarce, and only a handful of people remain. Disgraced knights, soldiers recovering from wounds, troubled mercenaries, and others with nowhere to go gradually gather there.

The fort cannot be restored simply by spending resources. As new people join you, previously unusable areas and facilities gradually become available. Who you recruit changes what your fort can do.

Open the Map and Choose Your Next Expedition

You decide where to go next.

Investigate to find water, food, or repair materials; answer requests from nearby regions; or undertake operations tied to the story. Review each destination's objective, local conditions, weather, threats, and expedition cost, then choose both your destination and the squad that will go.

Sending the same companions out repeatedly builds fatigue. Consider morale, supplies, and the expedition's finances as you decide who heads out and who stays at the fort to rest.

A Battlefield Where Allies and Enemies Share the Same Turn

Battles take place on a hex grid.

Unlike a typical SRPG, you cannot move all of your allies and then wait for the enemy to act. Allies and enemies act within the same turn, so an enemy may move immediately after one of your units.

Read the displayed action order to see who moves next. Command your company by combining terrain, attack ranges, formations, weapons, and skills.

It is not enough to defeat the enemy directly in front of you. You must predict who acts next and where the battle line may collapse.

Avoid Elite Forces—or Take Their Weapons

Your expeditions may encounter elite enemy forces that are too strong for your current company.

Will you avoid the danger and focus on your original objective, or take the risk and challenge them? If you can critically wound and capture an elite enemy, you can claim their powerful weapons and equipment.

But pushing too far means more injuries and greater fatigue and supply consumption. Will you continue fighting, or secure your gains and withdraw? Defeating every enemy is not always the right answer.

Even Victory Can Leave an Expedition in the Red

Winning a battle does not necessarily mean that the expedition itself succeeded.

Deployment costs, consumed supplies, fatigue and injuries, recovered materials and equipment—after every battle, all of it remains on your mercenary company's balance sheet.

Will you chase the victory in front of you, or preserve strength for the next expedition? Your decisions on the battlefield affect how you manage your company after returning to the fort.

Carry What You Gain into the Next Battle

Read a battlefield where allies and enemies are interwoven, weigh danger against reward, and bring back the people and supplies you gain.

Each expedition changes the fort's development and your company's strength, creating new choices for the expedition that follows.

Build your own mercenary company and stronghold through a cycle of expeditions and company management.

That is Marginalia.
