1954 might be the deepest talent pool of the golden age. Willie Mays returned from military service and won the MVP with a .345 average and 41 home runs. Ted Williams hit .345 of his own. Yogi Berra took home the American League MVP. And the next generation was just walking in the door — a rookie named Hank Aaron in Milwaukee, Ernie Banks in his first full season in Chicago, and a 19-year-old Al Kaline in Detroit. Larry Doby led the American League in home runs and RBI for a Cleveland club that made history. Every one of them is here, driven by their real numbers.

The 1954 World Series is one of the great upsets in baseball history. Cleveland won 111 games — the most the American League had ever seen — and snapped the Yankees' five-year championship streak, only to be swept by the New York Giants. Game 1 at the Polo Grounds gave us Willie Mays' over-the-shoulder grab, maybe the most famous defensive play ever made, and Dusty Rhodes' pinch-hit walk-off.
