Why Early Access?

“PoTN is built by solo developer during spare time & weekends. It started more than 7 years ago! and passed the green-light 4 years ago, and I don't plan to keep it around for 7 more years!!! At some points, the entire game was re-made from scratch, or at other point was moved to a new engine, or got the entire art re-made from ground up.

So why it need the early access now?
  • The game level editor is not something been there for long time. And was only built to fit my needs as developer, which means it is kind of chaotic. But I took the decision to ship the level editor with the game as main content, in order to expand the amount of possible hours to be played in the game by doubling the game content that will be made by useres via the editor.
  • While the editor is almost there, and it still need some user/player feedback, but the steam workshop integration itself is not there. And the best way i found it to add this part to the game, is to have the game live. So testing the share and voting functionalities become easier for me as developer.
  • There are some other systems that was implemented long time ago, but due to the fact of changing game direction many times, they became obsolete, and I need sometime to work on those system. Things like Achievement,s leaderboards, cloud saving,...etc. Those need sometime to be put right, but at the same time, I feel that there is no need to block the game release because of their absence.
  • The game core mechanic already done (aka penguin types), but there are other mechanics that i would like to try (more penguin types, which leads to more unique puzzle types), they can be good, they can really fit the game, but at the same time the game can be playable without adding them. And having the game in early access will grant me a nice opportunity to experiment stuff, while at the other hand i can get instant feedback from the game players and fans, which eventually would lead to triple the game content/levels without extra cost or DLCs or such.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Not more than a year! Everything is there, all what is needed is your input & support to make it better, more solid & to make the editor (which is huge part of the game) more interesting...And of course adding some other side systems (achievemnts, leaderboards,..etc.)”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

  • More levels
  • User made levels will made it to the final game
  • Achievements & Leaderboard
  • More editor functionalities to end up with 100% moddable game, not only a game with level editor

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game already have all the controller system, the core of the design, fully functional level editor & many levels to play.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Nope! Game price will always be the same, in order to keep it fair for the people who bought it at the early stages!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“With PoTN, it comes the early tries for me with Early Access, and involving the community in the development phase will be exciting experience that took sometime to get planned. The possible ways for the PoTN community to contribute are:
  • Build the editor with me, and make it much more powerful. The editor is good for developer, and it is already passed the chaos phase, and much more tidy, but it also need the input of its users, what is wrong, what is right, what is missing, what would make good feature,..etc.
  • User made levels will be defiantly in the workshop, but why not taking the best and high rated user made levels, and put it into the final full game? So it's a good chance to have levels made by a player that is part of the full original game package.
  • A good idea not only will make it to the game, but also it's creator name will make it into the game credits. So far there is no credits screen, and it make no sense to make it with only single name. So its the opportunity for many talented players who have a good sense of game and level design to get their names in there.
  • Players with art skills (3d, 2d, or audio artists,..etc) are always welcomed to send their fan made items and pieces, and it will make it to the game in a way or another. If not in the main game game, it will be either in the website, marking bundle, articles,...etc, and will defiantly be credited to it's creators.
  • Players, who really show interest in the game with their play time, they will get their identity some where in the game world. It may be a level name...a unique penguin avatar... or such. Who knows?!!
  • Localizing the game to many languages is a hard goal to reach, but with the community support, the game can make it to all the world known spoken languages! And also a good chance for a player to get their name in the game too. So, not only creating levels or art is what will make the credits list longer!
  • If someone can't do any of the above, it's enough to play the game and report any bugs, it's a very positive way to get involved in the game development. The bugs report by the community will let their names show in the next release as a contributor in the release.
  • It's a single solo humble person team, so the community will be always my QA team, that I'll be proud of.

If PoTN going to be early access, and people will be involved in giving their opinions, then all of those opinions have to be appreciated and considered in a way or another. I'm a single developer without a huge team, and i won't make it great game without a community supporting the game, and I'm sure your help, your thoughts, and your ideas is what will make it an unforgettable game!”

About This Game

Penguins of the North (PotN) is the peak in penguin puzzle platforming! As the first adventurous band of penguins to reach the North, you must help lead these poor fellas through a new wild frontier filled with interesting puzzles and evil enemies.

The twist? Players must control all penguins at the same time with just one controller (hey, no one said these were the smartest penguins). However, these penguins are adaptive and possess unique abilities to help them overcome new challenges they encounter on their journey. Find a way to utilize their penguin powers wisely to grab the key of each level and reach the exit, all while keep them alive (well as many as possible…).
