What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Sail On is feature-complete and fully playable. We're releasing in Early Access because we want the core audience to help us make two calls we trust players to make better than we can: the final balance of the cannonball system - about a dozen projectile components, essences, base shells and boons that combine into millions of possible shots - and one outstanding design decision: endless mode vs. an endgame map for the post-run meta layer. A few months of live player data beats another few months of internal playtesting. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About three months. We'll keep players updated on progress along the way, and we would rather take a little longer than ship a 1.0 that isn't ready.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The core game stays the same - the full version is about polish, content and one outstanding design decision. We plan to add:

- More items, projectile components and enemies
- The winner of the endless mode vs. endgame map decision, shaped by player feedback
- Balance and difficulty tuning based on real runs
- Controller support, Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud saves

All of it arrives as free updates for everyone who owns the game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Feature-complete and playable from hub to final encounter. The Early Access build includes:

- All 5 biomes
- About 100 items in a grid-based inventory
- A cannonball workbench with about a dozen projectile components, plus essences, base shells and boons - millions of possible combinations
- Procedurally generated voyages with fights, shops and events
- Broadside naval combat against swarms, elites and bosses while a storm closes in
- Between-run progression: storage, unlocks and quests

Keyboard only for now (WASD + Space). Expect rough edges, balance swings and frequent updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We plan to raise the price when the full version releases to reflect the added content. Everyone who buys during Early Access keeps the game and gets every update up to and including 1.0 at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll use the Steam Community forums as our primary feedback channel throughout Early Access. Three conversations matter most to us:

- Balance - which cannonball combinations feel broken, which feel weak, and which biomes need tuning
- Endless mode vs. endgame map - we'll put the decision to players and share what we learn
- Bugs and rough edges - every report gets read

Updates will come with clear patch notes saying what changed and why.”

About This Game

The Shallow Sea doesn't owe you anything!

Not survival. Not glory. Not a second chance... But... It seems to like you, so it will favor you a ship, a cannon, and enough salvaged debris to turn that cannon into something no gunsmith would ever sanction.

Sail On is a 3D pirate naval combat roguelite where every projectile is a weapon YOU design. If you want to survive in The Shallow Sea, you will have to stack modular projectile atoms, create unique combos and maintain an edge over your enemies:
- An exploding cluster-shot? - You will need it.
- A chain of ricocheting thunder shells? - It's the bare minimum.
- A heatseeking piercing metal rod imbued with the essence of light? - Nothing special really.

Sail out into the depths of the sea to bring back the riches and the rags. Nothing goes to waste in The Shallow Sea.

Plot a course through a procedurally-shaped map across five distinct biomes. Complete special quests to unlock new weapons, stash your favorite items between runs and hunt down giants to make the world a better place.

How far can you Sail On?

Ghost Ships — sail against fallen captains

Every captain who sinks is claimed by the sea!

When a player's voyage ends, their ship is saved exactly as it was and returns as a ghost enemy that ANYONE can encounter. Craft builds strong enough to sink other players asynchronously, and earn achievements and cosmetic upgrades for your victories!

  • Real builds from real players, rising from the deep in your runs

  • Ghosts fight with the cannons and items their captain died with

  • Play offline and you'll still meet the developers' fleet of hand-crafted ghosts

🧪 Build your own cannonballs

The heart of Sail On is the cannonball atom system - a dozen projectile components, plus essences, base shells and voyage boons, that snap together into combinations never explicitly designed. Splitters, chainers, freezers, homers, detonators, proximity sensors, chargers, cluster-shots, cluster-ING shots, shooting clusters and A WHOLE LOT MORE. Mix and match them into millions of devastating projectile combos. The one clever shot that wins the run? It's yours to engineer. We just built the parts, you should BREAK THE GAME WITH THEM OR LOSE!

🗺️ A new sea every voyage

Procedurally generated voyage maps across 5 distinct biomes, stitched together from 50+ encounters. Weather, enemy fleets, hidden coves, traders, altars - nothing stays where you left it.

⚓ Return to port. Come back stronger.

A unique twist on the roguelite formula. Between runs, your hub grows. Unlock the Workshop to refine new projectile components, add modifiers to weapons and upgrade your ship. Open the Docks for better ships.

A unique twist: THE STORAGE - You get to keep up to 3 items between runs. Set yourself up for future success by keeping key build components or bank your legendaries for those rare hunts.

⚔️ Combat with dials, gadgets and levers

No traditional aiming, just positioning and A LOT of levers and buttons. Through a blend of strategy and tactical execution you will have to make do with the resources you are given and find ways to adapt to your surroundings. Combine various devices, modify on the fly or sink to the bottom. The choice is yours.

The Shallow Sea calls for you! Are you ready to Sail On?
