Why Early Access?

“Dead Sector is a data center simulation developed by me, a solo developer, with a love for computer systems. The game focuses on the more enjoyable aspects of scaling out your infrastructure without the tedium of debugging system errors and issues. From assembling server boards and balancing hardware specs to standing up massive storage clusters and managing storage space, there is plenty of depth to explore. Input from the players during early access will help steer the amount of depth we build into these systems with the goal of striking the right balance between enjoyable gameplay and system complexity.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Dead Sector is expected to be in early access for 9-12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Based on feedback during early access we plan on adding more content such as hardware and infrastructure object as well as adding more depth and control to existing data center systems where needed. A strong focus will also be placed on quality of life updates ensuring the players interface is intuitive and functional as well as balancing the overall economy and specs of various components and objects in the data center. Light modding capabilities will also be evaluated at this stage to give the players more customization options. These plans will evolve as feedback comes in.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Dead Sector is already in a playable state with a full level unlock tree, researchable perks and equipment. Players can spend many hours designing their data center floor, building complex clusters, optimizing their cable layout, testing and overclocking servers, building redundancy and automating system failure events. The data center floor is nearly limitless and player can expand and run as many servers as they see fit. With that being said, bugs and issue may be encountered and balancing of the parameters, economy and overall pace will be a core focus as players provide feedback.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Early access will be priced lower than the full release once the game leaves early access in a more polished and stable state and more content available.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will be actively listening to players feed back to help gauge the depth and complexity of the systems and adjustments to improve the player's experience. Steam Community Hub will be my primary focus with other platforms being offered as needed. Although being a solo developer I do plan on releasing regular updates quickly for priority issues and leaning on community input to decide what gets built next to capture the best aspects of managing a data center while keeping the game fun and enjoyable.”

You begin with a bare room and a single server you assembled by hand. Grow it into a sprawling enterprise data center: rows of hundreds of racks, redundant power and networking, massive storage fabric, and a steady stream of clients pushing heavy workloads across hardware you designed yourself every day.

Design your own servers

You do not buy servers off a shelf. You build them.

  • Choose every piece of hardware and where it goes: processors, memory, storage drives, network cards, GPUs, and enterprise AI accelerators, each with its own cost, performance, and power draw.

  • Build the right server for the work. A server tuned for log processing is wasted money on an AI training run.

  • Unlock new chassis, board form factors, appliances and more as you grow, from compact single socket nodes to dense intertwined GPU, CPU and storage clusters.

Build out the facility

A great server is nothing without the room around it, and this is where the real engineering begins.

  • Lay out your floor rack by rack and slot your servers into place.

  • Feed them power through UPS units and distribution panels, but mind your circuits, because a single overloaded run can make an entire aisle of servers go dark.

  • Stitch it all together using network appliances and cables, storage fabrics and more to form the networks and clusters each workload demands.

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Dead Sector's in-game rank insignia icons, app icon, and Steam store graphics were produced procedurally via custom Python rendering scripts (PIL and resvg) authored with AI coding assistance. The output is deterministic vector and raster compositing, not generative-AI imagery. No image, audio, or animation generation models were used in any content shipped with the game. Game design, mechanics design and logic are original developer work.
