What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The core game is playable, but there are still several areas we would like to expand, refine, and polish before considering the experience complete. We are using Early Access to gather feedback from a wider range of players, particularly regarding gameplay balance, difficulty, usability, level design, and overall presentation.

As a small development team, Early Access will allow us to observe how different players interact with the game and identify improvements that may not be apparent through internal testing alone. Community feedback will help us prioritize the remaining work and shape the final stages of development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect the Early Access period to last approximately one to two months. This estimate may change depending on the scope of the remaining work and the feedback we receive from players.

Our priority is to use this period to address important issues, improve the overall experience, and evaluate the planned additions before moving out of Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For the full version, we plan to further improve the game’s presentation, accessibility, and supporting features.

Planned improvements include revised graphical assets, gameplay adjustments, quality-of-life updates, and a tutorial level that better introduces the game’s mechanics. We also plan to explore online leaderboard functionality and tools that allow players to create and share levels.

These plans may evolve during development based on technical considerations and community feedback. Our overall goal is for the full version to provide a more polished, approachable, and feature-complete experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version contains the game’s core gameplay experience and is in a late stage of development. Players can experience the primary mechanics and content, although some supporting features, graphical revisions, balancing adjustments, and quality-of-life improvements are still in development.

Players can access the procedurally-generated levels, move around in them (running, jumping, climbing up the sides of buildings...), avoid obstacles, get hit by obstacles, kick obstacles out of the way, pick up power-ups and other pickups, win by arriving at school on time, or lose by taking too long to reach the school. Players can also save levels they've generated in the Recent Levels and Saved Levels menu.

The current build may also contain bugs, rough edges, or areas that require additional optimization and polish. Features such as the planned tutorial, online leaderboards, and level-sharing functionality are not yet part of the complete experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We currently plan to keep the game at the same price during Early Access and after the full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to closely follow player feedback through Steam Community discussions, reviews, bug reports, and other feedback submitted during Early Access.

We are particularly interested in feedback regarding gameplay balance, difficulty, controls, level design, clarity, accessibility, performance, and quality-of-life improvements. Reports about bugs and technical issues will also help us test the game across a wider variety of hardware and player configurations.

As a small team, feedback from the community will provide perspectives that we may not encounter through internal testing. We plan to use that feedback to identify common concerns, prioritize improvements, and evaluate the remaining features and changes before the full release.”

About This Game

Running Late is a fast-paced platformer that puts you in the shoes of Ayumi, a Japanese high-schooler without a care in the world. However, one day Ayumi finds herself cursed by a yokai, and now must arrive to school on time every day until the curse is broken. Blessed with superpowers by the thunder god Raitaro, Ayumi must race against the clock to reach school on time, doing tricks and dodging obstacles along the way!

THE YOKAI'S CURSE

Ayumi is irresponsible and immature, habitually getting late to school. After being cursed by a Kitsune, Ayumi finds herself in a nightmare scenario: Her home town's layout is shuffled around every morning, must arrive to school on time each day, or else the yokai will steal her soul! Thankfully, Ayumi is blessed by the thunder god Raitaro with awesome powers, letting her climb up walls, survive great impacts, and come out of falling from heights unscathed. Ayumi must find her way to school in record time each and every day if she hopes to break the Kitsune's curse!

INFINITE REPLAYABILITY

Rush through an infinite collection of levels, climbing buildings, picking up power-ups, and taking every opportunity to go faster. But be careful! Oncoming traffic, animals, and more will get in your way and knock you back on impact. Skillfully dodge obstacles and go for a record clear time!

HAND-DRAWN ANIME VISUALS

Every visual in Running Late was hand-crafted in-house, going for an anime look. Original music accompanies those illustrations to bring a home-made world to life.
