What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Everburning Dark is built around three core experiences: 2048-style Roguelike merging combat, AI-reactive storytelling, and companion progression with build growth. All of these systems require substantial feedback from real players in order to keep improving.

This is especially true for the AI narrative system. Players can use free-form text input to interact with characters, events, and the world itself. Different ways of expressing intent may affect story branches, combat encounters, shops, rest opportunities, and companion relationships. Through Early Access, we hope to observe how players actually use these systems and improve the game based on feedback, including narrative responses, combat pacing, content density, balance, and onboarding.

Early Access allows us to refine the game together with players while the core gameplay is already playable, so the full version can offer a more stable, richer, and more replayable experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Everburning Dark to remain in Early Access for around 6 to 12 months.

The exact timing may change depending on player feedback, content expansion progress, AI system stability, combat balance, and the overall level of polish. Our goal is not to leave Early Access as quickly as possible, but to move toward the full version once the core gameplay, content scale, and overall experience have reached a more mature state.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to further expand the game’s content scale, system depth, and overall level of polish in the full version.

Planned areas of expansion include more enemy types, more Boss mechanics, more Relics, Items, Skills, dishes, companions, NPCs, town facilities, events, and route branches. We also plan to continue improving the AI-reactive narrative system, so that players’ free-form input can more naturally affect the story, events, shops, rest opportunities, companion relationships, and world changes.

We also hope to add more Scenario content in later versions. Different Scenarios or routes may feature different narrative focuses, enemy lineups, event structures, and art styles, allowing players to explore the Ning Dynasty, The Reincarnation Sect, and the truth behind this world from different angles.

The full version is also planned to include further improvements to UI, tutorials, onboarding, balance, content guidance, performance optimization, and localization. We want the final version to not only contain more content, but also help players better understand the relationship between combat, builds, AI storytelling, and town progression.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version already includes the game’s main core loop.

Players can experience 2048-style board-based merging combat, defeat enemies by merging tiles, managing abnormal effects, and using abilities, Relics, and Items. The game also includes an AI dialogue and story progression system, allowing players to use free-form input to interact with characters, events, and the world, creating different changes in each journey.

The current version also includes basic Roguelike build content, some enemies and Bosses, Relics and Items, events, shops, rest opportunities, town progression, companion interaction, and collection records.

However, the Early Access version is still in active development. Content quantity, combat balance, AI narrative performance, UI experience, onboarding, companion progression, town facilities, and later route content will continue to be adjusted and expanded.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to set the Early Access price based on the current scale of content.

As future versions add more content, features, and system improvements, we may gradually adjust the game’s price. Any price changes will be communicated to players as early as possible and will be matched to the expansion of the game’s content and overall level of completion.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We hope the player community will take a direct role in helping us refine Everburning Dark.

During Early Access, we will focus on gathering feedback about combat pacing, enemy and Boss mechanics, Relic and Item balance, AI narrative responses, event content, companion interaction and progression, town growth, onboarding, and UI experience.

We plan to communicate with players through the Steam Community, announcements, feedback forms, discussion forums, and update logs. Player feedback will help us decide which content should be expanded, which mechanics need to be simplified or strengthened, and which AI narrative responses need further improvement.

Our goal is for players to do more than test the game. We want them to help us shape this ever-changing dark fantasy world together.”

About This Game

Everburning Dark is a board-based Roguelike built around three core experiences: 2048-style Roguelike merging combat, unique AI-driven storytelling with unlimited free-form AI dialogue, and interactive AI companion growth.

On a limited board, you will merge tiles, create chains, manage abnormal effects, and fight enemies and bosses with unique mechanics. Combat is not simply about stacking numbers. It is about constant judgment: when to merge, when to hold back, when to clear the board, and when to unleash a burst of damage. In this 2048-style combat Roguelike, you will collect unique Relics and Items, overcome the enemies of this strange world, and shape your build around different strategies in each run through Relics, Items, Skills, and temporary upgrades. Failure is not the end, but preparation for your next descent into the dark.

During your journey, you can also freely type and converse with AI characters, events, and the world itself. The game supports unlimited AI interactions and allows players to connect their own AI services. You are not limited to clicking preset choices. You can question, deceive, test, cooperate, or sabotage in your own words. Your conversations will affect story branches, combat encounters, event outcomes, shop contents, rest opportunities, companion relationships, and the truth you ultimately uncover.

We also promise: we will not sell any AI usage points or tokens in the game, and we will not restrict players from connecting their own AI models.

The story takes place in the final years of the Ning Dynasty. Famine, rebellion, religious rites, talismans, incense, and buried histories weave together into a world of Chinese folk horror. The Reincarnation Sect claims it will correct a mistaken timeline. But as you go deeper, reflections in wells begin to misalign, words on old steles begin to change, and the so-called “gods” slowly reveal shapes that should not belong to the human world.

Of course, you will grow stronger, strong enough to seek out the horrifying truth buried at the deepest layer of this world. The AI-driven companions you meet will also respond to your actions along the way.

The hour of return has come! Reincarnation draws near!

Key Features

Unlimited AI Conversations

Get the game once and use its AI conversation features freely in your runs. No subscription, no message packs, and no per-use charges.

Ask more, lie more, test more choices, and explore different paths through the same collapsing world.

Speak Freely, Change the Journey

Characters are not limited to fixed dialogue. You can type freely to ask questions, test loyalties, hide information, or make your stance clear, and they will respond based on the current state of your journey.

These conversations may affect event clues, shop inventories, rest options, relationships, future encounters, and story branches. Different responses can lead the same run in very different directions.

2048-Style Board Combat

Combat is built on the merging logic of 2048, but the goal is no longer simply to reach a higher number. You must plan chains on a limited board, manage anomaly tiles, and find the right moment to strike.

Merge tiles, create bursts of damage, stabilize the board, and deal with enemy interference. Every move can open a new opportunity—or push the run closer to collapse.

Enemies That Change the Rhythm of the Board

From common enemies to elite foes and bosses with their own rules, enemy pressure comes from more than raw numbers.

Some enemies create anomaly tiles. Some disrupt your merging rhythm. Others reshape the board over time. Each boss fight is built around distinct mechanics, forcing you to adjust your build, timing, and priorities.

Relics, Items, and Anomaly Builds

Each run lets you build around relic synergies, consumable items, ability effects, and anomaly tiles.

You can chase explosive chain damage, focus on anomaly control and survival, gamble on stacked rewards, or take a steadier path. Different choices create very different combat rhythms.

Shop: Relics and Items

A Journey That Responds to Your Choices

Outside battle, the journey itself can change based on your conversations and current state.

Event clues, shop inventories, rest options, and route choices may shift because of what you have said, what you have done, and what you have already uncovered. A simple stop along the road may become a moment of recovery—or the beginning of a drift away from reality.

Return to Town, Prepare to Go Deeper

At the end of each journey, you return to town with what you have gained.

There, you can improve your abilities, strengthen your combat options, unlock new growth paths, and review the notes, clues, items, relics, tiles, and endings discovered along the way. Each return is not an ending, but preparation for the next descent into the abnormal world.

Town Overview

Companions Are More Than Combat Support

In a world torn open by rebellion and anomalies, your companions each carry their own loyalties, secrets, and pasts.

As you talk, choose, and travel together, you can learn more about what they truly believe and strengthen their support abilities in battle and exploration. Different companion growth paths bring different forms of support, and may also change how you understand this land, this rebellion, and the so-called “truth.”

Naier still tries to protect the most fragile kind of goodness in a collapsing world; Shopkeeper Tao may seem like a smooth-talking merchant, but she appears to know far more than she is willing to say.

More Content Still in Development

Everburning Dark is still in development. We will continue expanding enemies, items, relics, skills, NPCs, companions, town facilities, and story routes, giving each journey more build options, narrative variation, and unexpected encounters.
