What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Exotic Matter is more than just a game - it is an engine built for open-world sandbox games. And now that the engine is stable enough and we have our first part of the main world ready, we want to get the community involved. We have a lot of ideas where to go with this project, but we need your feedback to create something truly amazing. That’s why we opted for Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We estimate that the game will remain in Early Access for about one year, maybe a bit more. There is a lot of content and features that we want to add to the game. And we strive to be thorough when it comes to bug fixing. Also stabilizing the API for modders is a big task that will require a lot of effort to get it right - so we don’t want to rush things.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“In comparison to the Early Access version we envision the full game to feature a more complete single-player experience with a lot of facilities on the planet to explore. Also the planet will have a great deal more secrets to discover and the crafting/replicating will be better balanced. Furthermore we plan to have enemies running around in the facilities and on the surface as well as to add a set of different particle weapons for the player to defend themselves.

On the engine side we intend for the full release to have a stable modding API and a tight integration into STEAM Workshop, so that creating and sharing content is as easy as possible. Furthermore we plan to add more features that facilitate the creation of new content within the game itself, making it possible for every player to create their own worlds with just a few clicks.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Exotic Matter in Early Access gives you the possibility to be one of the first to play the game and join its active development as part of the community!

The single-player campaign currently features a fully simulated planet to roam around freely. The planet also contains a ship wreck that doubles as tutorial level and an alien facility nearby to explore. Countless of puzzles, items, lasers and block types await you.

On the engine side you have the possibility to check out the modding interface and play around with creating your own worlds, items and block types. Sharing and even more API features will be added through updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We realize that giving an Early Access game a chance is more time consuming and the experience might differ from what you are used to get from a full released game. So we offer the Early Access version of Exotic Matter at a discount compared to the later price of the full release version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a lot of ideas where to go with this project, but we want and need your feedback to create something truly amazing. Every idea is valued by us and carefully considered for implementation. And even if we opt against implementing some of your ideas, we are looking forward to seeing your own ideas as mods for the game.”

Exotic Matter's second Update: "New Beginnings" is now live!

Hello everyone!

We’re happy to announce the release of Exotic Matter’s second content update: New Beginnings! It is available for download now (you may need to restart Steam).

Following a ton of fantastic playtesting experiences and feedback from players at Gamescom (a big thanks to you!), the team at Moebiusgames has completely revamped the opening minutes of the game and the game’s balancing. This includes:
  • Largely redesigned Criterion (includes a faster ‘way out’ and more loot)
  • Criterion opening segment completely redesigned to train players in all mechanics including crafting
  • Criterion opening segment completely redesigned to make the player’s goal clear for the entire game
  • Added hidden (and not so hidden) side locations all over the planet!
  • Improved weapon balancing – player can create better weapons more quickly and the basic weapons, including the drill, now do very minor damage
  • Improved enemy balancing: enemy health and properties improved
  • Improved UI handling: right click in a container UI will now directly move the item to the inventory (and back!)

You can keep track of our detailed road map on Trello, but for the next 2 months our main priority is:
  • New dungeons!
  • New NPCs!
  • A new, built from the ground-up UI system (the current one is a Java plug-in that causes issues for many users)

Our next update is planned for 28 September. Watch this space for more details!

Please post on the Steam forums if you encounter any issues or have any questions. Or join us on Discord.

Thanks for all your support and for reading!

About This Game

Shipwrecked on an alien planet light years from earth, you are tasked with finding a rare and invaluable substance that could save humanity from complete destruction.

Explore the randomly generated open world of planet Xcylin, delve into the ruins left by an alien race, and expand your arsenal and abilities. Exotic Matter offers countless items, weapons and block types to discover and unlock on your adventure to save Earth.

Exotic Matter is a single-player open world voxel Metroidvania adventure, currently being developed for PC. A blend between a sci-fi mystery and a survival/crafting experience, Exotic Matter takes you on a compelling adventure through fully simulated planet with roguelike underground facilities. The game's sophisticated "dungeon" generation system ensures that no two playthroughs or dungeons are ever the same.

Exotic Matter also features a fully moddable engine, allowing you to explore countless other worlds created by the community or put on your creative hat and make your own sci-fi adventure!

  • a completely simulated planet open for total exploration
  • fully destructible and reconstructible terrain
  • build your own shelters/bases with sophisticated in-game technology. Connect lights and doors with switches, pressure sensitive blocks and even in-game computer systems
  • mine resources deep below the surface and find hidden treasures and secret underground complexes
  • a vast amount of different block types, each with different attributes and abilities
  • tens of ancient items and technologies left behind by an alien civilization
  • a crafting system combining personal crafting and large-scale crafting via replicator technology, for even more complex items
  • tens of roguelike facilities for you to explore - some large and important, some small and secret - all created by a sophisticated dungeon generation system
  • a "wide linear", deep sci-fi narrative driven by your own exploration and sense of adventure
  • intelligently interacting and overlapping procedural generation systems - from the alien landscape to secret facilities - ensuring no two adventures ever play the same
  • a fully moddable engine allowing you to create your own entirely custom worlds. Built-in modding support means that almost every aspect of the game is laid open to your creativity (from items and block types to planet composition and terrain, to biomes, and more)!

Please note that although these features are all planned and most of them are fully implemented, they are all subject to change due to the fact that this is an Early Access game.
