Imperial Wager: The Shattered Crown of Augustus is a minimalist political simulation designed to capture the volatile, grinding reality of ruling a fractured realm across decades, or even centuries. The immense complexity of medieval statecraft is distilled into games of chance, spatial puzzles, and calculated delegation.

The sprawling logistics of marching armies, quelling riots, and collecting tithes are abstracted into stamping geometric mandate cards onto a territorial grid. Operating from your Regent’s Keep, your authority is enacted by interacting with ancient devices, curating the psychological makeup of your cabinet, and manipulating the realm through layered cardplay.

Shattered upon the fall of the First Emperor centuries ago, the god-blessed Crown has remained sealed within clockwork relics, hoarded and fought over for generations. Now scattered and half-broken across the continent, these remaining devices are your only path to the empty throne. You can dictate every sword swing and tax collection yourself, but trying to micromanage a decades-long conquest will drain you quickly. A true Dominus knows better; they set the stakes, delegate the rest, and play the odds.

Indirect Governance (The Ruling Will)

A vast empire cannot be ruled by one hand. You must recruit talented (or deeply flawed) officials to fill your Cabinet. Their individual perks and distinct vices meld together to form the Ruling Will. This overarching psyche matrix dictates your state's behavioral logic, guiding how your delegates autonomously pacify unrest, expand borders, and react to the shifting world while you watch the grand strategy unfold.

The Relics of Statecraft (Risk & Reward)

The First Emperor left behind esoteric, humming devices to calculate fate. By wagering your treasury on these unpredictable machines, you play literal games of chance to multiply your wealth, uncover rare mandates, and fuel your automated routines. What begins with pulling levers and issuing manual decrees eventually builds into a self-sustaining political engine, allowing you to step back as your cabinet takes the reins.

Abstracted Conquest (Geometric Cardplay)

Geopolitics is a puzzle of overlapping authority. Draw from your faction’s deck and project your intent onto the map using Mandate Cards to establish influence, quell unrest, or siphon enemy power. Conquest is not instant. A single card does not claim the land; rather, it sparks numerical trends that take days to resolve. No empire is built in a day, and a wise ruler simply sets the wheels in motion, allowing time to cement their victories.

The Shape of Law (Political Balancing)

Rebuild the lost order of the Dark Ages by drafting the very constitution of your fiefdom. The friction and compromise of statecraft are abstracted into a spatial puzzle, where ambitious policies rarely align and no government can sustain every mandate at once. The resulting constitution functions as fluid machinery, harnessing internal friction to serve the contemporary ambitions of the faction.
