What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're doing Early Access because we have way more ideas we want to try out. It's great right now, but saying "WARNING! EARLY ACCESS!" is a quick way to communicate our desire to craft great input from Vive players worldwide into a beach ball legend.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're going to do this Early Access collab with y'all all summer long.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're interested in installing more elements in the world, possible adding more places to teleport, or fewer places to teleport if they aren't fun. We've got a chance to create fantastic, realistic, playable art. Do we make a low gravity mode? Do we ditch the storms? Do we make the grass greener on the other side? Do we need a runway with a fan that launches Beach Balls? A ping pong mode? I'm not sure! Do we need a night mode with glowing beach balls and fireflies? Do we need sculptures? Do you have a cool sculpture? Do we want to build the castle out of limestone? Should glass appear if players try to step off the wall? Do we need moss? What about a tornado that eats beach balls? Do we want achievements? Do we need a music visualizer that shoots you beach balls in sync with music? Should the castle play sound when you hit it in giant mode? Kitten Balls? Pizzas? Do we add a host of key commands for spectators to interact with? There's a lot we could do, but we want to keep it simple free form fun.

Oh, we'll probably also add an achievement for hitting a beach ball.

Beach Ball Valley is a carefully crafted, whimsical world. It is not an empty shell of a bigger game right now. We're not planning on making more maps, story campaigns, beach ball crafting, multiplayer or artificial elements. We'll probably ditch the score board in favor of a bi-plane dragging a score banner across the sky.

Our goal is to make this a peaceful valley for all the folks out there seeking to befriend beach balls.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Beach Ball Valley has everything you need for hours of fun right now. It has a warm sun, blue sky, sound, force feedback, visuals, beach balls, storm systems, teleporting, a minigame that tracks scores, and keyboard driven testing features that we've enabled to give players a chance to test out possible features of Beach Ball Valley. It has a few little surprises.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Price will probably not change as we leave Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Being a small development group means we can be very responsive. We'll be reading & responding to your feedback! We'll be having surveys, live chats, and discussions! We're excited to see all the unexpected fun Beach Ball Valley will bring. Stay tuned.”

Beach Ball Valley Early Access

We're going to be out of early access soon, but we've made big changes which we will release this month! Here's a bit of back story behind our development!

Beach Ball Valley started out a long long time ago. It started back when HTC was going to Release the vive in December 2015. We had 2 months to learn VR development and develop a game in VR. This game made a lot of people smile and laugh at VR demos in 2015, so we figured we'd build it out for a release with the Vive.

Release schedules changed to April, and we shifted to work on a different game entirely - a castle defense crossbow game where you were being actively attacked by wizards and dodging shrapnel, as your castle was getting destroyed. The team behind that game believed that it needed to look AAA and be way more complex (skill trees, etc) if we were going to release. We didn't release, but instead I turned back to the crowd pleasing beach ball whacking project.

We released it on launch day against all the other VR launch titles & were promptly buried. Had we waited a week or two for people to start looking for content, we may have reached more folks.

We we kept updating the game and tweaking things based on demos we did to friends and game conventions. We watched how people played and kept up the goal of making it accessible and fun. It's been a blast seeing people play it & seeing families where the kids play the game and then play with their parents with the keyboard controls. It's also lots of fun seeing the extra trackers in play - giant paddles on your feet is hilarious.

We've come a long way - figuring out lots about the UX behind VR & how to experience something using only pizza paddles. We've wrapped up all that we've learned and are packaging it into a nicely accessible beach ball paradise.

About This Game

Beach Ball Valley gets huge smiles like no other VR game I've seen. It's just super fun to smash beach balls with huge paddles.

First played at a vr demo night in 2015. People loved it. So, we polished everything to feel great, sound great, and look great. Beach Ball Valley has been hand crafted from feedback at numerous events 100s of players in live testing. It's fun. It's silly. It's satisfying to loft a beach ball over the distant hills. It's a beautiful experience to share the joy of VR with everyone.
