How To Play

Nonograms (also referred to as "Picross") are grid-based puzzles where cells are filled or crossed out based on the numbers in the associated row and column labels.

The labels on the rows and columns list out the numbers which refer to the exact length of consecutive filled cells in the respective row/column. Between each number in the label, there will be a gap of at least 1 cell, which is filled via crosses.

A very core rule for this style of game is when all possible layouts of filled and crossed out cells have a common solution for individual cells.

In the first example below with the label "3", there are 3 possible combinations of where it can be filled safely. In all 3 cases, the middle column is filled. This allows us to safely fill the cell in the middle.

In the second example below with the label "2 1", there are also 3 possible combinations. The same strategy can used to fill in the 2nd column as all 3 possible combinations of this label have it filled in, regardless of label complexity. An example nonogram row showing the "overlap" rule.

Notably, this rule also applies to crosses, but this case usually only applies when a secondary rule is also in place (such as in the column for these examples). More strategies and tricks can be found on the nonogram Wikipedia page!

Occasionally you will encounter cells that are ambiguous, meaning they have more than one solution. These cells are marked with yellow.

Ambiguous cells can either be filled or crossed out safely as this game will not punish you for choosing “incorrectly” here. There are also items that highlight these tiles for you!
