What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Gunmetal Rails is a solo-dev project, and the survivors-like genre thrives on variety, balance, and community feedback. Early Access lets players shape the game alongside development — helping identify what feels good, what's broken, and what should come next. The core gameplay loop is solid and playable now, but there's a lot more content planned that will benefit from real player input during development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan for Early Access to last approximately 6 to 12 months, depending on the scope of community feedback and how development progresses. The goal is to ship meaningful updates regularly rather than rush to a finish line.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand the game significantly during Early Access. This includes more locomotives with unique mechanics, more weapons and enemy types, the full set of 150+ upgrade cards across 6 tiers, hand-drawn artwork replacing placeholder visuals, co-op multiplayer for 2-4 players, Steam achievements, cloud saves. We also plan to add an original soundtrack.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game features a complete gameplay loop with 4 playable locomotives, 12 weapons across multiple rarity tiers, 150+ upgrade cards across 6 tiers, 3 cart types, 9 enemy types with unique behaviors, drag-and-drop cart and weapon management, a shop system with tiered upgrades, and endless wave survival with scaling difficulty. The game is fully playable from start to game-over. A free demo is also available with a curated subset of content.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will alawys remain the same”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is central to development. We plan to use Steam discussions, community forums, and social media to gather input on balance, new content ideas, and feature priorities. Players who report bugs, suggest builds, or share what feels fun or broken directly influence what gets worked on next. This game is being built with its players, not just for them. Social media platforms will be created once best gauged where the community would want to interact.”

About This Game

Build a War Train. Survive the Wasteland.

Gunmetal Rails is a roguelite bullet hell where you build and arm a locomotive, cart by cart, weapon by weapon. Attach carts to your train, bolt guns into their slots, stack upgrades, and fight through waves of enemies that get nastier every round. How you build is how you survive.

Your Train, Your Rules

This isn't just stat-stacking. Your build is physical. Every weapon fires from its actual position on the cart. Every cart adds weight and slows you down. Every slot is a decision. Do you run three light carts with fast guns, or one heavy cart loaded with a legendary cannon? That's on you.

Features

  • Multiple unique locomotives — each with a passive mechanic that changes how you play

  • 150+ upgrade cards across 6 tiers — locomotive buffs and per-cart enhancements with real trade-offs

  • Dozens of weapons across multiple rarity tiers — from rapid-fire miniguns to explosive launchers

  • 3 cart types — Light (2 slots), Medium (4 slots), Heavy (8 slots)

  • Varied enemy types — including healers, bombers, stealth units, and bosses every 5 waves

  • Drag-and-drop cart management — slot weapons, reorder carts, apply upgrades between waves

  • Endless wave survival — how far can your build take you?

Choose Your Locomotive

Iron Horse — Balanced all-rounder. Hits harder with every cart you own.

Phantom Express — Glass cannon. 15% dodge, 15% crit, light carts have no speed penalty. Can't equip heavy carts.

War Rig — Slow tank. +5 armor, all weapons gain 10% explosion chance. Medium and heavy carts only.

Scrap Hauler — Economy engine. +30% gold, +1 shop card, 20% cheaper prices. -30% damage.

Early Access Roadmap

Gunmetal Rails is in active development. Here's what's planned:

  • More weapons, enemies, and bosses

  • More locomotives with wilder mechanics

  • Hand-drawn artwork replacing all placeholder visuals

  • Co-op multiplayer (2-4 players)

  • Steam achievements and cloud saves

  • Community-driven balance and content — your feedback shapes the game

Pricing Promise

The price will always remain the same. No price hikes at launch, no "early supporter" tax in reverse. If you buy in Early Access, you're getting the full game at the same price as everyone else. Early supporters just get more time with it.

Built With the Community

Gunmetal Rails is a solo-dev project, and the survivors-like genre thrives on variety and balance. Early Access isn't just about funding — it's about building the game with the people playing it. What weapons feel good? What builds are broken? What do you want to see next? That feedback drives development. Community will guide the balancing of the game, to ensure its available to everyone to enjoy.
