Reviews

“Critical Chaos is a game that wears its influences on its chest. It uses its inspirations to evoke an experience reminiscent of a bygone era of RPGs. This is an easy recommendation for anyone who grew up with a Super Nintendo or original PlayStation and wants to return to that style of game. For those who did not, but still enjoy RPGs, Critical Chaos has plenty to offer. It has a full-length story, a meaty postgame, and tons of options for building an effective team. The game is also more forgiving than many 90s-era RPGs while still encouraging player agency and exploration. Overall, Critical Chaos does exactly what it sets out to achieve: a return to form for those who have missed the classics.”

About This Game

A RETURN TO CLASSIC RPG ADVENTURE

Critical Chaos draws on the RPGs that defined the SNES and original PlayStation eras: adventures built on exploration, meaningful progression, memorable characters, and the freedom to shape your party.

Explore because you’re curious, not because a quest marker tells you where to go.

Modern conveniences and reduced grinding preserve the spirit of those classics while keeping the journey approachable.

ORDINARY PEOPLE. EXTRAORDINARY RESOLVE.

The world of Statera is already at war.

An ambitious empire advances through force, fear, and promises of safety through control. Cities fall. Borders collapse. Monsters roam once-peaceful roads. Beneath the conflict, ancient powers stir, and time itself begins to fracture.

But this story isn't about an empire, an ancient prophecy, or the world's fate.

It's about family.

At its center is a middle-aged former martial artist with one simple goal: find a missing loved one.

She's out of shape, tired, stubborn, and far from the legendary hero anyone would expect to save the world.

She doesn't seek glory. She doesn't have all the answers. And she certainly can't do it all alone.

As the conflict deepens, she finds herself surrounded by family, battle-hardened veterans, warriors, outcasts, and unlikely companions, each carrying their own burdens, convictions, and reasons to fight.

Together, they face a choice that defines the adventure:

Stand for what's right, even when the odds are hopeless, or surrender everything they love.

STRENGTH IS WHAT YOU STAND FOR

Critical Chaos celebrates courage, loyalty, honor, resilience, and the kind of strength that serves a purpose beyond oneself.

Its characters are not perfect heroes.

The men are tough, proud, capable, and unapologetically masculine. They value discipline, brotherhood, courage, and standing between danger and those who need protecting. Their confidence is tested, their convictions challenged, and their strength means little without restraint.

The woman protagonist at the center of the story is every bit as human. She has weaknesses, makes mistakes, needs the people around her, and finds extraordinary resolve in circumstances she never wanted to face.

Their strengths complement one another. Respect is earned through actions, loyalty is tested through hardship, and sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is admit they need help.

There is room for toughness and tenderness, courage and fear, irreverent humor and genuine sacrifice.

Because true strength isn't about being invincible. It's about having the character to do what's right, even when it comes at a cost.

TURN-BASED COMBAT WITH REAL DEPTH

Critical Chaos features a tactical turn-based combat system for players who want more than basic attack, magic, and item loops.

Enemies are visible on the map. There are no random battles. Every encounter is something you can see, prepare for, avoid, or confront on your own terms.

Manage turn order, counter enemy attacks, protect allies through taunts and shield blocking, steal valuable equipment, exploit weaknesses, and combine Classes, Essences, Talents, and Ikons into powerful strategies.

Victory rewards preparation, adaptability, experimentation, and effective teamwork.

Fight intelligently. Protect your squad. Make every decision count.

BUILD YOUR SQUAD YOUR WAY

Family members, veterans, warriors, outcasts, and unlikely allies come together under extraordinary circumstances.

Every companion brings different strengths, personalities, abilities, and tactical possibilities.

Develop your main characters through Class changes, subclassing, stat investment, Talents, Essences, and cross-Class skill progression.

Build specialists. Create balanced formations. Assemble overwhelming offensive teams, disciplined defensive squads, or unconventional combinations that suit your preferred playstyle.

No single way to build your party.

Your squad. Your strategy. Your adventure.

CHOICES, CONSEQUENCES, AND NO EASY ENDINGS

Some victories come at a cost.

Some sacrifices aren't understood until much later.

Choices accumulate throughout the adventure, hidden paths reveal new possibilities, and multiple endings explore different outcomes for Statera, your companions, and the forces moving behind the war.

But finishing the main story doesn't mean the adventure is over.

A substantial postgame introduces major questlines, hidden storylines, dangerous challenges, powerful enemies, superbosses, and the path toward the true conclusion.

For those who remember spending countless hours discovering what their favorite RPGs concealed beyond the final boss, Critical Chaos was built with you in mind.

The credits aren't necessarily the end.

EXPLORE A WORLD WORTH GETTING LOST IN

Venture beyond the main story and discover a world built to reward curiosity.

Explore hidden locations, navigate puzzle dungeons, tackle platforming challenges, travel by vehicle, and uncover secrets by jumping, swimming, climbing, and exploring through time.

Take a break from the war with optional activities like Fishing, Crafting, and Farming, or pursue hidden quests, powerful gear, and challenging encounters.

Whether you're chasing the next major revelation or simply wondering what lies beyond an unfamiliar path, exploration is its own reward.

A NOTE FROM THE DEVELOPER

Critical Chaos is the result of more than seven years of solo development. My military service, along with stories shared by people I served alongside, helped shape the game’s fictional operations, leadership decisions, and battlefield situations.

I used no classified or sensitive military information, and no real person’s identity, personal details, or likeness appears in the game. Its characters, events, and military scenarios are fictional.

Critical Chaos is my tribute to the classic RPGs that made me fall in love with gaming.

Built on Grit. Driven by Character. Unapologetically Old-School.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Contains religious and supernatural themes comparable to those found in the television series Supernatural. Includes themes of war, battlefield loss, grief, and funerals, as well as a non-graphic suicide, references to addiction, and portrayals of alcohol use. Some drinking is implied, but characters do not drink on-screen. An optional Blackjack-style minigame uses a fixed amount of earned in-game gold as an entry cost and awards only Guild Tokens redeemable for in-game items. There is no real-money wagering, variable betting, cash-out, or ability to win additional gold. The game also features non-graphic violence and mild coarse language throughout, similar to what you find in many PlayStation-era JRPGs. Overall, this content is most suitable for teenagers and older, with parental supervision for minors.
