What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The goal of Early Access is to engage the players in the development of the game. While it is a casual adventure game, it is also educational in nature, and as such, feedback from users on pacing, content, and effectiveness will play an important part in the development of the game!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Six months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The goal is to include Katakana in its totality and hopefully provide a decent exposure to Kanji, basic grammar, and vocabulary. This will be spread over several islands, where each island focuses on one particular skill level at a time.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The first island of Hirajima is close to being finished in terms of layout and design, but interactions and features on the island are still undergoing development.

In the different regions you can challenge NPCs to teach you vocabulary and hiragana. Challenge the Hiragana Dojo Master to unlock the next levels of Hiragana Dex to progress.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Not planning to change the price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback will impact the scope of the game; Whether there will be more focus on the early stages (Hiragana + Katakana) and to which degree Kanji, Grammar and Vocabulary will be included.”

About This Game

Learning Japanese can be hard.

But it can also be an adventure!

Nihongo Hunter is an adventure game with retro vibes that helps aspiring Japanese students get over the first hurdle of learning the basics!

You start on Hirajima Island, which hosts the Hiragana Dojo. On this island, all the locals will teach you Hiragana as you travel through various picturesque locations inspired by the islands of Okinawa, Japan.

The philosophy of the game is not to go too heavy on the educational aspect, but rather let the player engage in a low-stakes adventure, but where exposure and mastery of the basic building blocks of Japanese is necessary to progress!

For early access:

Travel through 4 different regions of Hirajima and talk to NPCs. If you can complete their challenges, they will teach you Hiragana and Vocabulary to add to your Hiragana Dex and Jisho.

In order to unlock the various regions, you must face the master of the Hiragana Dojo and level up your Hiragana Dex! Challenges include romaji to hiragana challenges and vice versa.
