What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“"Brakes? No, thanks!" is built on a unique, two-phase gameplay loop that combines precise driving with chaotic destruction. Early Access is crucial for me to gather feedback from players and collaboratively fine-tune the balance between these two elements. I want to ensure that both skill-based scoring for risky maneuvers and creating spectacular, physics-driven pile-ups are equally satisfying. Your suggestions will help me shape future game modes, new vehicles, and the overall direction of development, creating a game that will be engaging for at least several solid hours.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan for the game to remain in Early Access for about 6 to 12 months. This period will allow me to implement planned content, gather valuable community feedback, and refine the game to the standards I've set for myself. This timeframe may change depending on player suggestions and the pace of new feature implementation. If nothing stands in my way, I would like to release the full version in the second half of 2026.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of "Brakes? No, thanks!" is planned to be significantly expanded compared to the Early Access version.
In terms of quality of life, I plan to add, among others:
- Extended game settings.
- Integration with Steam platform features.
In terms of gameplay:
- More content: an expanded fleet of unlockable vehicles and new, diverse maps.
- Skill System and Upgrade Shop: I would like to further develop the already implemented upgrade system. My vision includes introducing more of them. Unique abilities for vehicles are also planned to add a new tactical layer to the gameplay.
- New Game Modes: I want to introduce additional modes, such as Quick Run or Custom Run, which will complement the Career Mode and allow playing without the limitations present there.
- "Mad Millionaires" System: I would like to introduce a phased system dividing progression into stages, in which players will be able to unlock new characters and associated sets of unique cars.
- Audiovisual enhancements: new shaders, expanded sound layer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version offers a complete and refined core gameplay experience, providing satisfying fun from the very beginning. You will find in it:
- A complete gameplay loop: The two-phase mechanic of precise driving and chaotic destruction is fully functional.
- An extensive progression system: Unlock new vehicles by hunting rare cars in traffic and complete quests.
- Early version of the Upgrade Shop: The game already includes a basic system of permanent upgrades that can be purchased with points earned in the game.
- Detailed statistics: The game tracks your results during each run and sums them globally. Distance driven, playtime, number of destroyed cars, and other statistics form the basis for quest diversity.
- Starting content: Several unique, playable vehicles with different characteristics and the first, fully playable forest highway map.
- Quality and convenience: The game offers full support for controllers and keyboard, a working audio system, and support for Polish and English languages.
The game is stable and optimized, but as this is Early Access, you may encounter bugs. Your reports will help me make it even better!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to gradually increase the price of the game as new content and features are added. Players who choose to support the production during Early Access will receive the game at a lower price, appreciating their contribution to the project's development.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will actively participate in discussions on the Steam forum and on our Discord server. That's where I will collect your feedback, suggestions for new features, and bug reports. Regular updates will address your needs, and your ideas will have a real impact on the final shape of the game.”

About This Game

Feel like a true road outlaw!

Test yourself in this two-phase arcade game. First, fight for survival by breaking records while driving, and finally, inflict as much damage as possible during the ultimate pile-up. Track your stats for time, distance, or dangerous maneuvers, as well as the number of demolished vehicles and the fine value.

Drive safely in the left lane, or take a risk and grab a bonus on the right. Overtake other cars by mere millimeters for powerful bonuses and squeeze between vehicles.

Content

You will start your career behind the wheel of a taxi, and then hunt for more vehicles – complete tasks and destroy cars to add them to your collection. You will race on a forest highway map, with plans to add more in the future.

Gameplay

This is not an ordinary racing game – and don't be fooled by the simple controls (because in Brakes you can literally play with one hand). The unique gameplay loop rewards agility in dense traffic, but when you finally crash... that's when the festival of destruction begins! Approach it tactically – utilize moments of greatest car density and destroy the most valuable cars for a higher Fine.

In addition to the pile-up, the Fine also includes: driving in bonus lanes, as well as "close calls", which is avoiding moving cars at the last moment. Such maneuvers carry a high risk of an early end to the run, but they tempt with big bonuses when successful.

Progression

You will unlock new vehicles in an unusual way too. Each new car requires fulfilling the conditions of various quests, but completing it is not the end of the effort. The new car will start appearing on the road, and it will be added to your collection only when you completely demolish it.

And cars differ not only in looks. Speed (starting and maximum), acceleration, lane change time, but above all, durability and the resulting value added to the Fine with each impact until the final explosion will be something worth paying attention to.

Sometimes the quests will focus on survival time, sometimes the number of cars burned in a pile-up, sometimes the amount of the Fine or other statistics. Choose the right vehicle and overcome all challenges!

Upgrades

Earn points for challenging quests to invest in permanent upgrades. Visit the Shop in the main menu and choose from a wide range of bonuses that will change your experience. Increase your chances of survival with a shield that will protect you from the first collision, or go for aggression by buying an upgrade that will make your crashes even more destructive. Their skillful combination will allow you to create powerful synergies and break new records.

Quality

From the very beginning, I care about both the gameplay and all elements typical for decent productions. Although this is my first, small game, I have implemented full interface localization for Polish and English. Additionally, the game allows for easy adjustment of sound volume in the main and pause menus (by default it is set low so as not to kill your ears on first contact with the game). I also cannot fail to mention support for controllers, keyboard, and even the mouse itself – you play however you feel comfortable. And the icing on the cake is the fact that music producer ShayD (personally a good friend of mine) created unique, energetic music especially for Brakes, which adds to the atmosphere of the speeding vehicles. ShayD also supports the game's audio quality.
