What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small team building a complex Dark Fantasy RPG with unique mechanics like gambling-based crafting. Because our game relies heavily on intricate systems - such as item modifiers, tactical grid combat, and a risk-vs-reward economy - balancing them requires real player feedback.

Furthermore, we are committed to a distinct visual identity. Most of the game's visuals are handcrafted by us. We aim to minimize the use of store assets, and on the rare occasions we do use them, we dedicate significant time to transforming or re-sculpting them to seamlessly blend with our unique art style. Early Access allows us to create this high-quality content at a steady pace while the community helps fine-tune the gameplay.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to stay in Early Access for approximately 12 to 18 months. As a small duo working on the project alongside other commitments, we want to ensure every update brings meaningful quality rather than rushing to the finish line. This timeline may change depending on player feedback and the scope of new content we decide to implement.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For the full version, we plan to extend the campaign content. We intend to significantly expand the scope of the game, including plans for:

- Expanded Itemization: We want to add more weapon families, armor types, and a wider variety of loot modifiers.
- Corvarg Expansion: We aim to introduce new buildings in the Town and more activities to perform within them.
- More Resources: We plan to include additional types of resources to gather and manage.
- New Mechanics: Implementation of new gameplay systems to further enhance the strategic depth.
- More Content: Additional regions to explore, unique biomes, and new enemy types.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is fully playable and features the complete core gameplay loop: Town Management - Expedition - Combat. Players can currently experience:

- The Corvarg: Fully functional town with gambling-based crafting, resting, and quest acceptance.
- Combat: Tactical FPP turn-based system on a grid with random enemy positioning.
- Systems: Deep itemization with hundreds of modifiers, over 40 unique status effects, and a magic system (Mage Tower).
- Exploration: Node-based expeditions with events and combat encounters. While the content is limited compared to the final release, the mechanics are solid and offer a high degree of replayability.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, we plan to slightly increase the price upon the full release. We believe in rewarding our early supporters who help us shape the game during development with a lower entry price”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are committed to interacting with our community through various channels. We plan to use the Steam Discussion forums and our Discord server to gather feedback. We also plan to organize polls to collect specific data on player experiences.

Community suggestions will play a key role in shaping future updates, specifically in these areas:
- Game Balance & Pacing: Tuning combat difficulty and the overall speed of progression.
- Quests & Expeditions: Improving mission variety, objectives, and map events.
- Economy & Resources: Balancing resource scarcity and management within the Town.
- Itemization & Crafting: Refining weapon stats, modifiers, and gambling minigames.

We will prioritize features and bug fixes based on these community discussions to ensure the game evolves in a way that resonates with our players.”

About This Game

A PROMOTION YOU DIDN'T ASK FOR

You are the sole survivor of a caravan slaughter. You arrive at Corvarg not as a hero, but as a replacement. The town is in ruins, the locals are desperate, and the Tyrant King Reoryk doesn't care about your struggles — he only cares about his tribute. There are no prophecies here. Only a broken village, the dangers lurking in the valley, and a mysterious voice in your head pushing you forward.

OLD SCHOOL SOUL, MODERN HEART

Blades or Bets is a love letter to the hardcore classics. It fuses the immersive perspective of 90s dungeon crawlers with the addictive loot loop of modern Hack'n'Slash games and the unforgiving management of expedition RPGs.

KEY FEATURES

  • Tactical First-Person Combat: Inspired by the depth of classics like Wizardry, combat puts you face-to-face with the enemy. Every turn matters. Utilize a vast array of unique actions and strategic positioning to survive against a growing roster of distinct enemy variants.

  • The Loot Chase: A system built for hunters of the perfect roll. Drawing inspiration from genre-defining Action RPGs, items are complex. With hundreds of potential modifiers and a deep upgrading system, finding a rare weapon can change your entire playstyle.

  • Rebuild or Perish: You are the Steward. Manage scarce resources to restore and upgrade essential town buildings. Every shipment sent to the King is food taken from your people. Balance your duty to the Crown with the survival of your village.

  • High-Stakes Gambling: When skill isn't enough, turn to chance. Engage in unique gambling minigames to multiply your wealth or upgrade equipment. It’s a mechanic that can turn the tide of your journey—or strip you of everything.

  • A Living, Hostile World: A dynamic day-night cycle changes the threats you face. Something is watching from the deep forests and mines, patient and hidden.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game contains frequent depictions of dark fantasy violence and visceral body horror. Enemy designs could feature severe mutations and deformations of the human body, including exposed internal organs, open wounds, visible skulls, and dismemberment. Some creature designs may feature partial nudity in a monstrous or mutated context.

Additionally, the game centers around a High-Stakes theme with extensive simulated gambling mechanics. This includes dice, cards, roulette, and grotesque, diegetic parodies of modern monetization systems like lootboxes or battle passes. All gambling mechanics are strictly part of the crafting and progression system using in-game currency only - no real money is involved.
