A Roguelike where you cast spells with words-literally. Combine them horizontally and vertically (rarer letters make for more powerful sorceries), while you obsess about the perfect skillbuild and hunt for the best possible item.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We firmly believe in early player feedback to see what does or does not work, instead of relying on our "brilliancy" as developers only.
How does the game's balance feel? Is it too hard, too easy? Which additional Quality of Life features does the community want? What ideas do players have we cannot even imagine right now? We cannot wait to hear the answer to these questions!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“According to our plans, Vow of the Wordlocks will be in Early Access for 6 to 12 months, but ultimately prognosis is difficult, especially concerning the future, as the saying goes. In any case we plan with a speedy development cycle.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add more levels, more relics, more wordlocks, to expand the game in every possible dimension! Yet: let us know if you think of more drastic measures and you would like to see some core principles overturned! Since most core concepts will be in place with the begin of Early Access, we might turn our eye onto more complex game concepts, or find the courage to discuss all all those crazy ideas we have with you!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All core gameplay systems will be in place at the start of Early Access, in a state of polish many games could call a full release. Expect many spells, levels, and opponents! And all those randomly combine into endless possibilities.
We believe that the current state of the game can provide you with lots and lots of fun, only rivalled by the full release! Please refer to the "About This Game" section for more details, all content shown there is in the game!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We feel that a slight to medium price increase after Early Access has been completed might be fair. Specifics will depend on the scope of additional content and features added in Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will gather feedback on every update and conduct polls on which new or expanded features our priority should be placed. The main mode of communication is our Discord server, but of course we also visit the Steam forums regularly!
We love working with the community! This kind of collaboration only can lift this game to the next level.”

About This Game

Vow of the Wordlocks is a roguelike where you control a Wordlock and cast spells by forming letters into words - horizontally or vertically, the higher the score, the stronger the sorcery.

This is my vow to the dust that dreams upon the shelves:

To not silence contention with comfort

First, you need to choose a vow. For example, you can swear the Vow of the Librarian, sworn by Balthazar between the old books of the dragons' library, infamous for their ingenious poetry. And fight by the rigour of elemental magic, teleports and mind control.

Or you follow the way of Scheherazade, the Vow of the Storyteller, and weave your words into imaginations that fight for you.

To hoard no gold nor sway save it be in pursuit of this vow

No oath entirely forbids material possessions. Slain enemies drop them, and there are many treasures and chests. Your items will always improve, but never be perfect. Is it more important for your spells to pierce shields, or to heal of damage dealt to enemies? Do you prefer the "Subjunctive Burial Urn of Mir" over the "Indicative Alchemist's Mask of Syntax"?

All relics have a core component they change about the game, and randomly generated Affixes on top - to maximize the fun of hunting for the (preliminary) perfect relic.

Never will I stop doubting my old teachers and forefathers, whatever their brilliance may be

Do you want to score double when you place a letter on a certain tile, or force enemies to drown themselves in the sea? Are high stats of "Irony" preferable over "Rigour"?

But alas, the mighty power of the Internet might be of no avail - skilltrees are randomly generated, and so are the environments you fight your enemies in. Each iteration of your vow is completely different.

And ask only for the truth in what others forbade

Will you free the demon prince, bound to his pentagram via guilt, love, and remorse?

Will you part the blue sea by invoking the power of the staff of the eternal wanderer?

Will you reunite the four elements of fire, water, love and brass?

The foresaid I swear by the ice of Xuhivan the Godless, and by the staff of Sùlimo the Holy

(The vow may also be taken without religious affirmation)
