Echo Contingency is a mod-first co-op stealth shooter built for players who miss the precision and tension of classic stealth design. 

There's no "easy-mode" stealth here. No mark-and-execute, no soft cover snapping, and no go prone to become invisible. Instead, every system is readable, explainable, and punishing but fair. 

Inspired by the feel, pacing and clarity of early 2000s stealth, Echo Contingency focuses on light, sound, stance, and movement discipline. Detection is never random.

Guards react based on real light levels, surface types, and how fast you're moving. If you get spotted, you'll understand exactly why. Metal grating echoes. Carpet absorbs. Water splashes. Every footstep is a decision.

The Dual-Meter System

Just like the classics, you always know exactly how visible and how loud you are:

  • Light Meter - Four graduated levels from deep shadow to fully exposed. Dynamically calculated from actual light sources. 

  • Sound Meter - Your noise level relative to ambient sound. Time your movements to machinery, rain, or ventilation to mask your footsteps. 

Five Analog Movement Speeds

Use the mouse wheel or analog stick to dial in exactly how fast you move. Each tier produces different noise levels based on your movement speed. Creep silently at tier 1. Sprint at tier 5 and everyone knows where you are. 

Designed for two, Playable as one

Every mission supports 1-2 players with online co-op (Steam P2P). Play with a human partner or an ai companion who follows your commands. The game is built for coordination. 

Synchronized Operations

  • Boost teammates to reach alternate routes

  • Disable cameras and laser grids while your partner moves

  • Share intel on patrol patterns and light sources

  • Hacking operations requiring coordinated timing

No Chaos. No Run and Gun. Co-op stealth fails when players "go loud". Success is found with methodical, tactical skill and timing. 

Split-screen local coop and 3-4+ player modded variants supported. 

Mod-first means YOU get the tools

Echo Contingency ships with the same mission-building and modding tools we use to make the base game. Modding isn't an afterthought, it's the core architecture. 

Three Tiers of Mod Creation

Tier 1 - Data Modding (No code) Tweak weapon stats, AI behavior, detection sensitivity, etc through simple data files. Change how the game feels without touching code. 

Tier 2 - Mission Builder (In-Game) Build complete missions using our block-based level editor. Place patrol routes, set objectives, define extraction zones, and share your creations through the Steam Workshop. 

Tier 3 - Full Modding SDK (For Power Users) Create custom weapons, AI archetypes, character models, levels, skins, and scriptable events using our Unity-based SDK and EchoScript (Lua) API. If you can imagine it, you can build it.

Browse, subscribe, submit, and play community-made missions and mods directly from the game. Rate and review. Build a reputation. Become the creator of the hardest stealth mission ever made or the most ridiculous. 

We know what killed stealth games. We're not doing that. 

  • NO Mark and Execute - Every take down requires positioning, timing, and commitment

  • NO Auto-cover system - You position yourself. You peek manually. You control exposure. 

  • NO "Go Prone to Win" - Prone is contextual (vents, ducts, etc) not a universal invisibility button.

  • NO Regenerating Health - Resources matter. Getting shot matters. Survive til you find a med kit.

  • NO Auto-Parkour - Manual traversal points. You decide when to jump, climb, or take the long way. 

  • NO Binary Detection - Graduated visibility and sound. Guards don't instantly know your exact location unless you really mess up. 

  • NO Cinematic Autopilot - The game never plays itself. Every action is your choice.
