What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is being developed for free by members of the community. We're releasing the game in stages so everyone can see what we've built.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We cannot project an accurate release date because the project is built by volunteers. The level of commitment they make to the project varies and, as such, the development is not constant. We estimate the game will leave early access by January of 2030.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Currently, this early release only has one enemy type, the introduction to the story, and the introductory level. But we aim for the full version to include an entire storyline, a large facility to explore, multiple weapons, various game mechanics, a lot of enemy types, and multiple endings.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“As of right now, early access consists of the introductory level. We do extensive testing before each release, which should result in a relatively bug free experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, the game is free.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The game itself is developed by the community. We welcome and appreciate any help we can get, even if it's only a positive review or a bug report.”

About This Game

Note: The game is in early release. Networking and co-op is implemented, but the first early release only includes the introductory level where there is no co-op gameplay outside of finding each other using coordination and having the correct items. If you are looking for a co-op game to play with friends, check back for our future releases. Until then, we recommend you play solo.

Cardinal Fall is a nonprofit, community-developed, story-driven, 3d side-view, single to four player multiplayer, survival-horror, co-op videogame set within an original far-future dystopian sci-fi universe.

Set in the year 2742, you play as a clone—known as an Echo—located in a research facility where catastrophic events are unfolding. In the game, players will explore a series of sprawling locations while planning a way to escape their eventual fate. Having multiple outcomes, Cardinal Fall will test the player and their friends as they navigate, learn, and survive the hostile environment they find themselves trapped within.

Shepherded by Metahusk, a US based IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Cardinal Fall is a community project that is being developed for free by volunteers. This is an entirely donation driven game. If you like this project, you can donate by purchasing our Donation DLC on Steam or by visiting our website at more information.

The game is currently in production. This is an early release that features the introductory level. If you are a developer and would like to contribute, we would love to hear from you.

This side-scroller version is an early prototype of a larger first-person edition we plan to produce in the future. In the first-person release of the title, the focus will be placed on the immersion, horror, and atmospheric elements of the game.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The game uses pre-rendered AI generated voices instead of live voice actors, as well as some AI modified artwork for the marketing material, a very small portion of the in game art assets, and some aspects of the introduction video. None of the content is rendered in real time or live-generated.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The game contains content not appropriate for all ages, such as violence, gore, atmospheric environments, and disturbing monsters.
