What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“GearStorm is about creating small curated communities based on admins of servers that have the control over the game to create unique experiences and stories for their players. We want to begin to build that community of server admins and players to guide our development work early in the process.

We are committed to following through on our 5-year mission to get to a full release game. We are releasing early access to get our community to give us feedback on which goals and which parts of those goals to focus on. Right now our goals are:

  • Finish out the depth of realism, adding and deepening mechanics like damage consequences, vehicle simulation, weapon performance, and environmental realism.
  • Add content, more gear, weapons, vehicles, characters, building items, and maps.
  • Add stories, more stories, quests, missions and things to do in our world.
  • Expand the scope of the game with more performance improvements, larger worlds, and more players.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to have GearStorm out of Early Access and into its final full release form by the end of 2020.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version may adjust current features and functionality based on player feedback. There will also be significant additional content again based on community feedback. We plan to fully implement our complex combat and damage model for vehicles, monsters, and players including showing external damage on vehicles, monsters and players, consequences for players of damage to their body, We plan to add much more weapons, powered armor, and other gear as well as more maps, stories, and game modes all guided by community feedback. We plan to continually remaster the game with improved effects, graphics, sound, and look.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“GearStorm is a complete, play-tested multi-player game with locally hosted and dedicated server support for multiplayer as well as a single or multiplayer campaign mode with a complete story told in the GearStorm universe. The server admin role is complete and allows the server admin to spawn things, make their own quests and stories, manage the server, teleport players and themselves, change vehicle and weapon base stats, and fly. The vehicle simulation is complete with in-cockpit simulator, multiple weapons, vehicle customization, and vehicle damage implemented.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to increase the price once we exit Early Access and have a full release with all of the content in a full game implemented.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a community forum and Discord server that the developers are active on. We take our input from the community including actually story and quest content that people develop in-game. We focus not only on the priorities of our players, but actually giving them the power to change the game to suit themselves with customization.”

The World of GearStorm
In the year 2185, the human race is in its death throes. Earth itself is a desolate waste – ravaged by decades of war far more malignant and savage than any before. The final straw comes in the form of the Phage – a virulent genetically-engineered biological weapon that weaponizes the infected into rageful bio-mechanical horrors. The unstoppable Phage spreads like wildfire through man and beast alike. With no way to undo what was done, the remnants of humankind retreat into bunkers, walled cities, and fortresses. Every single human falls victim to the Phage.

Earth was all but lost until a glimmer of hope appeared. NASA’s space telescope TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) had been in operation for nearly a century and discovered an extremely unlikely habitable extraterrestrial world. These probes reported amazing findings dozens of light-years away on Apollyon – a small Earth-like planet with isolated continents in a large ocean. These islands showed signs of ecosystems, flora, and fauna.

The mad rush to escape this hellish Earth led to tragic mishaps and loss. Previous attempts to send manned generation ships to Apollyon failed – whether due to infighting or mechanical failure. In a final act of desperation, small unmanned probes fitted with advanced bio-printers were launched to seed Apollyon to save the species. These probes were encoded with the DNA and mental recordings of Earth’s finest and cast off toward the planet.

You’re one of these ghosts – a fabricant sent to an alien world to renew humanity.
