What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Pluto is in active development. We’re looking for as much input as we can get from you and anyone else who uses spatial computing to help us create the high-quality, remote communications service we all want and need.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We have a long journey ahead of us, and expect that it will be years before we are fully out of early access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Pluto will include the updates and features that were developed during Early Access. We are looking for feedback from you to help guide our development and prioritize service improvements.

Areas we are working on:
  • Easier connection, including more ways to find and add contacts and better notifications around missed connections.
  • More sharing. Additional ways to share files, experiences, screenshots, and more.
  • Better human representation. We are iterating on how to better capture and show your attributes to others.
  • Support for other platforms and operating systems.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

  • For a list of our currently implemented features, please refer to the "About This Software" section below
  • As one of the first 3D overlay applications, there are still performance issues that sometimes occur when opening and closing the dashboard and switching between applications.
  • Overlays in SteamVR don’t currently support depth, and thus Pluto avatars render on top of other applications regardless of position. To deal with this current state, we’ve added opacity options and the ability to fully hide other avatars.
  • While Pluto runs alongside other apps, it does not enable real-time sharing of what you are seeing with others. You can share a screenshot, but you can’t yet share a view into the application you are running with others.

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Pluto is a free service by design. As we continue development, we may explore new options to help us pay the bills and keep the lights on. We aren’t sure exactly what those options could be yet, but we’re committed to keeping our users informed. We’re on a mission to make Pluto a viable remote communication solution for as many people as possible.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Participation on our Steam community hub, our Discord channel, events and activities on the Pluto service, and the Pluto Customer Advisors program.”

About This Software

Pluto is creating a new way for humanity to connect from anywhere in the world. Pluto enables natural, human, 3D communication while you're using virtual reality. It runs alongside SteamVR and other SteamVR apps for direct, contextual, and comfortable connections that go beyond text, voice, and even video.

With Pluto, you can call and chat with friends while in any SteamVR application. Spend time with trusted friends and contacts even when you’re not in the same physical (or virtual) location. Stay connected while using individual or multi-person apps.
