What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“There's a joke in here about a dream being created with minimal staff and too much reliance on automation, but we'll spare you. The Isle's intent is to avoid being 'just another survival sandbox' or 'just another dinosaur game'; we want to be 'the' dinosaur game. Though the initial core of the game will be implemented upon release, this is a platform sandbox being developed for the community that will help shape The Isle into supporting any game-type imaginable. This goes from classic team deathmatch integration to dramatic park tycoon creation, accurate dinosaur ecosystem simulations, and thrilling survival combat. We believe we can create the basis and modding content for every player's dream that was or is a dinosaur game. After all, 'creation is an act of sheer will.'”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to leave early access by Q3 2018.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Day One Early Access version has the core implementation of dinosaurs and their functionality. There are currently many other planned features that we will be adding in the coming months, some of which already in development. Aside from internal planned features, community feedback will be vital in the creation and implementation of additional dinosaurs, player types, cosmetic skins, and various other aspects.

Current Planned Features:
- Mac + Linux + Steam OS Version
- Full Mod Support (i.e. skins, additional dinosaurs, extra or intentionally limited game features, maps, and gamemodes)
- Full Controller Support ( Xbox / Steam Controller etc)
- Other Steamworks Features (Achievements, Trading Cards, etc)
- VR Support
- Localization of All Game UI / Text
- Realistic Dinosaur AI with Ecosystem Support
- Dynamic Weather
- "Tribal" Faction Implementation
- "Mercenary" Faction Implementation
- Player Crafting System Implementation
- Base Capturing
- Dynamic Aerial Drop-In Spawn System
- Human/Dino Body Painting
- Dinosaur Taming
- Advanced Vehicle System
- Customizable Skin System
- More Dinosaurs
- Improved Sound FX, including regional sound localization
- Improved and Expanded Vegetation System, including interactive foliage
- Global In-Game World Quest (That will directly affect game development and story)

Aside from the necessity of community feedback finds for bug fixes, content suggestion, and creative feedback, the Isle will have a post-release content structure after Early Access has been polished to the best of our ability.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All necessary features such as options, settings, and graphics are present.

Dedicated servers, steam synchronization, and basic persistence are present.

The minimal requirements of a dinosaur survival simulation are in place. Players can choose from all available dinosaurs and have the basic needs for eating, drinking, and have the capability to move through the world, stalking and hunting other players and AI.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Pricing will be changed during each milestone of large development features such as the additional factions and vertical gameplay additions.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is imperative to the overall development direction of additional features on top of current content. These include, but are not limited to, dinosaur additions, future environmental biomes, weapons, skins, and community inspired creations.”

August 8

Greetings islanders,

Here's the July patch... in August. Look, don't ask. There's a joke here about a time machine. In actuality, we're just late. The reasons, or "patch notes" as we call them, are below.

Known Issues
The games build configuration has been changed to one more optimized, but this also means that the location of your user settings has changed as well. To find the new location, open the settings menu and look at the path listed near the bottom. You will need to reset your settings to have access to the new keys, so click the Reset button in the settings area and restart your game.

Note: Gameplay is being developed with Survival mode in mind, the following may not fully function in Sandbox.

The character database has been wiped.

  • New Night Vision system, eyes and footprints now glow in the dark
This has been a long time coming. No more nightvision that looks like gamma cranked up to 11.
  • Night vision viewing distance is different per class
Certain dinosaurs see better at night. We're still tuning this, so don't rage too hard if your favorite dinosaur isn't the best in the world at night.
  • New scent system, hold Q to detect footprints, food and water, doesn’t work if its raining
All dinosaurs can scent to varying degrees. With the changes to edible plants, herbivores can now easily sniff out and highlight their edible food.
  • Footprints no longer appear with every step but have a chance to appear scaled by speed
This was pretty simple but necessary with the way tracking works now. The faster you move, the more likely you are to leave prints behind.
  • Utah and Dryo now have increased jump survivability
These two, despite having pretty decent jumps, broke their legs too easily. This has been rectified with steel shin bones.
  • Fixed improper food values on several dinosaurs
A few decimals got switched around and resulted in a bad time. We fixed that.
  • Rebalanced growth times of all Survival species
Adjusted each species range (small/medium large) to be relatively similar, but have large gaps in between. Large animals now spend more time at a subadult phase.
  • Added AI dinosaurs: Orodromeus & Psittacosaurus
Cute, but succulent food for carnivores. Precious little noise makers.
  • Added the following dinosaurs to Survival mode - Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Diabloceratops, Dilophosaurus, Dryosaurus, Maiasaura
New dinosaurs are always good, so here they are.

  • AI dinosaurs now spawn on the maps
  • Increased overall number of spawn points
  • Spawn system now tries to avoid placing you near other players
  • Edible plants are now procedurally generated, with random locations
  • Foliage density is now the same regardless of quality level
  • Added more clearly visible landmarks
  • Added the North Star to aid navigation at nighttime
  • Added more water sources
  • Fixed misaligned physics volumes on water sources
  • Improved collisions on trees & rocks
  • Thenyaw Island: added shooting stars at night
  • Thenyaw Island: laid out where rivers will be placed in the future
  • Thenyaw Island: removed "party pool" lake at the center of the map
  • Isle V3: major re-landscaping of the entire island
  • Isle V3: added redwoods biome type (WIP)
  • Isle V3: added placeholder assets at various points of interest

  • Small foliage now reacts when you move through it

  • The official servers have been replaced with new hardware in new locations for both the east and west coast of the United States, and London and Frankfurt for Europe. Currently Dev 3, Dev 4, US 3 and US 4 are still undergoing this transfer and may have degraded performance compared to the other servers. The transfer should be completed by August 10th 2018.

    Note from the developer:

Overall, this is a massive stride forward that has so much work done under the hood that most people won't recognize. So many issues flew under the radar for a long time that have now been cleaned up that allow us to make large strides forward in development. We should have an announcement soon in regards to the final systems for dinosaurs. Hopefully the next gap between patches will not be this long, and you'll feel as confident as us that the result was worth the wait.

    See you on the island.

About This Game

A note from the developer:

Firstly, thank you for looking at our game. Despite the fact we aspire to create a fun game approachable by many, we feel the need to caution any potential users. We are undergoing experimental updates of the game's design and roll out patches daily, sometimes several times. This results in a lot of updates that some people find distasteful. As this occurs, user experience may drastically change. Features may be added, removed, or wiped entirely. More importantly, difficulty will gradually become more brutal as chances of survival become less likely. We, the developers, are actively going to design the future game islands and creatures to counteract known player tactics of survival. Your mistakes will be punished. Expect no survivors.

The Isle: A World Designed to Kill You

The Isle is a realistic, gritty, open-world survival horror game. There is only one goal in mind: Survive. The islands and its inhabitants will radically change, ever-evolving as players themselves learn how to grow, flourish, and thrive. There are no waypoints, tutorials, or ulterior precepts in mind to alter play styles or purpose. In the end, the only person you can trust is yourself.

These features are currently in the game and though they are listed, may have bugs that have not been discovered or addressed.

  • The Island: A vast landscape of dense forestand open plains, hidden within are various ruins and expanses that hold insight as to what was here...
  • Up to 100 players per server based on server hardware and bandwidth.
  • Sandbox System - Play as any of the dinosaurs (or humans!) added to the game, with no penalties or consequence to dying. Sometimes we don't want to struggle to survive, and that's okay.
  • Basic Dinosaur Simulation - Basic needs such as thirst and hunger are present. Start as a juvenile, grow to adulthood, mate, and raise young. Stalk your prey and avoid your predators among the dense forests and swamps.
  • Playable Dinosaurs - Choose between featured animals in the official survival mode, or join customized sandbox experiences with 30 playable dinosaurs such as Triceratops, Carnotaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Gallimimus, Utahraptor, Acrocanthosaurus and Allosaurus, with even more planned ahead.
  • Dedicated Server Binaries with Steam integration
  • Basic Dinosaur AI
  • An expansive island stretching across 16x16km²

Planning Ahead: The Future Development Goals

We realize that there is a long road ahead and a lot of work to be done in order to turn this into the dinosaur game we want it to be. Throughout development, we will be adding a lot more to the Isle based off of current planning and user feedback Some of these features are as follows:

  • Full Mod Support - Skins, additional dinosaurs, and various gamemodes such as deathmatch and a tycoon sim
  • Achievements, Trading Cards, Emotes, etc.
  • Localization of all Game UI
  • Realistic Dinosaur AI with complex ecosystems
  • 20+ Playable Dinosaurs
  • Indigenous Faction implementation
  • Survivor Faction implementation
  • Player Crafting System implementation
  • Base Capturing
  • Dynamic Aerial Drop-In Spawn System
  • Human/Dinosaur Body Painting
  • Dinosaur Capturing and Enslaving
  • Advanced Vehicle System
  • Improved Sound FX, including regional sound localization
  • Steam economy
  • "The Escape" global in-game world quest

Aside from the necessity of community feedback finds for bug fixes, content suggestion, and creative feedback, the Isle will have a post-release content structure after Early Access has been polished to the best of our ability.

Unique Triple-Faction Gameplay

Choose between three playable factions and find yourself stranded on a merciless island of harsh wildernesses, cunning dinosaurs, ruthless indigenous, fierce survivors, and rival players. Explore dark and foreboding forests, unforgiving caves, and beautiful but deadly mountain vistas for the supplies you will ultimately need to survive. As you progress and explore, you will happen across ancient ruins and abandoned military bases that, with perseverance and time, can convert into your own outpost or nesting ground in this hostile world.

  • As the survivor, you'll experience a sense of both wonder and terror as everything on the island has evolved to kill you. However, you will find yourself armed to the teeth and more than capable when it comes to survival skills. Discover how you came to be here, and escape. Nothing will stand in your way... so long as you still have ammo.
  • As the Indigenous, you will find yourself in-tune with the natural environment. Surviving here for many lifetimes, the indigenous are capable foragers and natural hunters. Form tribes or survive alone, you will be armed with spears, bows, poison, and makeshift camouflage. Become as ruthless as the beasts among you, or become food.
  • As a Dinosaur, you'll be the epitome of cunning and ferocity. From the swift and agile Utahraptor to the unstoppable Tyrannosaurus Rex, you must survive as a meager juvenile until reaching maturity. Form packs, create and defend your nests, hunt prey, and claim territory. All roads lead to death, or becoming the dominant predator of the island.

A Global Community Story

The Isle features a narrative told strictly through the environment, achievable only through immense cooperation among players. Hidden locations and artifacts are dynamically created within the open world that reveal the answers to all the questions that would arise. How are you stranded? Why can’t you just leave? How did the dinosaurs get here? What is the distant call that pierces the night? It will take the entire community to unravel the purpose to their being on the Isle and each discovery will directly affect the future of the game.

Become the Beast

One key focus of the Isle is the unique element of playing as dinosaurs and other creatures found on the islands. All will have a general familiar play-style, while each retain their own uniqueness of capability. Players can select a variety of creatures and grow from juvenile to adulthood. As your dinosaur grows, you can select different palette options and skins, growing your abilities to hunt, create your pack, and eventually mutate into a much powerful version of your dinosaur and claim the right as the Apex.

Unparalleled Mod Support

We will support all the features of Steamworks and allow for any aspect of the game to be modded by the community using Steam Workshop. Members of the community will be able to download a free copy of Unreal Engine 4 from Epic Games and generate mods and change all aspects of the game. This includes everything but not limited to making a new map, adding new dinosaur types or new game modes such as a Dinosaur Park Simulator or a role playing focused game mode. The most notable feature is turning off large portions of the game for a specific user experience, such as having an island strictly populated by dinosaurs.

You can subscribe to mods on the workshop and select what ones you want enabled when you start your server. Players joining the servers will automatically obtain the required mods without even needing to restart the game.
