About This Game

STORY

At the MAD program, two top-tier college professors, Darren and Câi, are the ultimate coding duo! Darren is a master of the Swipe programming language, while Câi is a wizard of the Brew programming language. One day, just as Darren is about to start his morning lecture—BZZT!—every computer in the lab goes haywire! Câi storms in and reports the same issue in his classroom. Legendary professor Peter arrives with alarming news: the Calamity Virus has awakened from its 100-year seal, and it's time for its chaos to spread! With Peter freshly retired, it’s up to Darren and Câi to descend into the basement’s basement—a place so deep it might not even have Wi-Fi! Their mission? Debug the Code Calamity before it crashes everything for good!

OVERWORLD

Between battles and puzzles, you'll explore the interconnected areas of the MAD program's lowest levels: the basement's basement. The overworld is designed as a series of indoor areas with environmental challenges that evolve as you progress. Some areas are initially locked and require solving nearby Terminals or progressing the story to access.

You will control both Câi and Darren, with the ability to switch between them at any time to lead the group. Each character can interact with specific Terminals found throughout the environment. To solve puzzles linked to their respective Terminals, you'll need to alternate between Câi and Darren.

PUZZLES

Throughout the basement's basement, you will encounter various Terminals. These terminals control various systems of the basement's basement, such as conveyor belts, doors, and gates. In order to manipulate these systems, the terminals need to be reprogrammed.

Câi and Darren each specialize in a different programming language: Câi knows Brew and Darren knows Swipe. You'll reprogram terminals by switching between professors to write programs using these languages, each with unique syntax rules. Swipe is written more naturally, while Brew is more symbolic. The two languages are designed to be similar, but with subtle differences that challenge the player’s attention to detail and understanding of basic programming logic.

BATTLE SYSTEM

The Code Calamity has commanded his errors and warnings to roam the basement's basement in search of intruders! Coming into contact with them will initiate a battle, wherein you will use your deck of Battle Chips to uniquely engage in combat.

At the start of your journey, Peter provides you with a set of Battle Chips—powerful tools used in combat that have various effects, such as damaging enemies, bolstering defenses, and restoring health. While many Battle Chips offer helpful effects, some come with risks or drawbacks, requiring strategic use.

When you choose “Attack”, five Battle Chips are randomly drawn from your deck. At the same time, each chip is assigned a random label from A to D. Chips sharing the same label can be used together in a single turn, allowing you to stack their effects.

You can choose which battle chips appear in battles in the pause menu. Clicking on a chip will toggle it between TRUE or FALSE. Chips labelled “FALSE” will not be used.

NICK'S SHOP

Throughout your adventure you'll meet Nick, a clumsy professor who live's in the basement's basement. He's running a side-gig selling extra Battle Chips and Items. You can return to him at any point to purchase new chips to help you turn the tide of battle.
