What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Observe is a game about systems colliding and I can't find the interesting collisions on my own. Every player who writes an AI script finds strategies I'd never think to write. Every scenario someone builds pushes the simulation somewhere I never tested it. That loop is how this game gets developed, not a nice extra on top of it.

There's a practical reason too. The Arena is a ranked ladder of player-written AI, and a ladder needs opponents. It only becomes the thing it should be with people already in it.

So Early Access is where I:
-find the edge cases that only turn up when hundreds of worlds are running at once
-balance systems against strategies players actually use, instead of the ones I assumed
-shape the Arena and its seasons around the people competing
-decide what to build next from what people ask for”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Longer than I first said, When I wrote this page I guessed a year. That year came and went, because each update kept opening up something more worth doing than shipping 1.0 on schedule.

So instead of a date, here's the condition. Observe leaves Early Access when the systems that decide whether a nation survives (economy, stability and rebellion, war, the nuclear age) are all in place and balanced against each other, when the tutorial teaches all of them, and when the Arena has run a full ranked season from start to finish. My honest estimate for that is another year. If it slips again, the updates keep coming in the meantime, which is the part I can actually promise.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is this game with its systems finished, not a different game. Since Early Access started, Observe has gained nuclear weapons, stability and two kinds of rebellion, forts and front stances, buildings, a reworked naval and political system, the Arena ranked ladder, a 30 lesson interactive coding tutorial and era theming. What's left is more of that: deepening the simulation and the tools around it and finding new more interesting systems to add.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Stable, and well past what the original Early Access build was. The map is 3,400+ regions and the scenario editor, God Controls, AI Studio with its MiniScript editor and tutorial, the Workshop integration, the leaderboards and the Arena ladder are all in and in daily use.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will go up modestly when Observe leaves Early Access. Buying now is the cheapest it will be.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Discord is where the discussions and the polls on what comes next happen, and I read every suggestion on the Steam forums and every email that reaches me.”

About This Game

THE ULTIMATE GRAND STRATEGY SANDBOX

Watch history unfold, take command of any nation, or build your own worlds from scratch.

In Observe, civilizations rise, forge alliances, wage war, and collapse under their own weight. Experience an autonomous living simulation, intervene at any moment with God Mode, or take direct control of any country on Earth.

Rewrite history in the flagship 1912 First World War campaign, author custom scenarios and branching campaigns, or script autonomous national AI using built-in code tools.

A Living, Unscripted World

Set the world in motion and watch history write itself. Driven by autonomous AI, nations pursue their own survival across an ever-changing geopolitical landscape.

  • Front lines in motion. Dynamic borders, advancing armies, aerial dogfights, and amphibious landings illustrate global conflicts in real time.

  • Live world chronicle. A dynamic news ticker tracks declarations of war, broken pacts, ideological uprisings, and global crises as they unfold.

  • Internal collapse & revolt. Overextended empires fracture under economic strain, radical ideologies ignite civil wars, and oppressed populations rise for independence.

  • Strategic map modes. Analyze the world through specialized overlays displaying military power, stability, wealth, food reserves, cultural demographics, and alliances.

  • The nuclear brink. Industrialized powers construct missile silos and stockpile atomic warheads. Nuclear strikes devastate populations and leave permanent radioactive wastelands.

  • Endless simulation. When civilizations fall or a world reaches its end, procedural generation can instantly birth a new world so history never stops.

Reach Into the Simulation

God Mode places total omnipotence at your fingertips. Manipulate the living world in real time: redraw empires, orchestrate global cataclysms, or steer wars from the shadows.

  • Dictate diplomacy. Declare wars, enforce peace treaties, forge coalitions, annex territory, and establish puppet regimes with a single click.

  • Paint the map. Redraw sovereign borders, partition continents, or assign territories using intuitive brush tools.

  • Control the front line. Force military breakthroughs, reinforce struggling defenders, or collapse enemy front lines instantly.

  • Spawn chaos or liberation. Found new nations, incite popular revolutions, trigger famines, or wipe entire empires off the map.

  • Alter national power. Instantly adjust standing armies, state treasuries, tech levels, nuclear arsenals, and capital cities.

  • Override AI behavior. Toggle diplomatic agency or nuclear permissions for specific nations, or freeze AI decision-making worldwide.

Take Direct Command

Step down from the clouds and take the wheel. Select any nation on the map at any time, assuming full direct control while the rest of the world continues to think, react, and fight around you.

  • Govern your nation. Expand industrial capacity, balance the national treasury, manage food supplies, and negotiate alliances or peace on your terms.

  • Command the military. Direct army groups along combat front lines, assign strategic objectives, coordinate naval fleets, and launch amphibious invasions.

The Great War: 1912 Campaign

The built-in historical campaign begins in 1912, with Europe on the precipice of global catastrophe. Lead a Great Power through escalating diplomatic crises, industrial mobilization, and total war.

  • Historical dilemmas. Navigate branching national events and political crises that determine how your empire responds. History sets the stage; the outcome of the war is yours to rewrite.

  • Total war mobilization. Enact national laws, research wartime technologies, convert civilian factories, and coordinate massive armies and dreadnought fleets.

  • Survive the home front. Victory on the battlefield means nothing if starvation, economic collapse, and socialist uprisings bring your government down from within.

Draw Your Own World

Design custom worlds directly in-game using a comprehensive cartography suite, then transform your canvas seamlessly into a playable simulation.

  • Precision drawing tools. Sculpt coastlines and borders with adjustable brushes, single-pixel precision pens, line tools, and flood fill.

  • Flexible region generation. Paint provinces by hand or outline border perimeters to instantly flood-fill political regions.

  • Reference overlays & layers. Import real-world or fantasy reference maps to trace, organizing your project across versatile art layers.

  • Up to 8K resolution. Build colossal maps with up to 8K resolution, or import and modify Observe's detailed Earth map.

  • Naval & land topology. Customize regional adjacency, define deep sea zones, and plot custom straits and shipping lanes.

  • Steam Workshop sharing. Publish your maps directly to the Steam Workshop, or explore hundreds of community-created worlds.

Build More Than Borders

Bring your geography to life. Define starting geopolitics, demographics, and rules of engagement across any map, or utilize the built-in Earth map featuring over 3,400 historically authentic regions.

  • Found custom nations. Establish territory, designate capitals, design flags, configure military forces, and set initial diplomatic relations.

  • Define ideologies. Craft distinct political doctrines with unique gameplay modifiers, war justifications, and diplomatic tendencies.

  • Demographics & cultures. Distribute ethnic populations, define cultural homelands, and seed potential separatist movements that can fracture nations.

  • Strategic terrain & logistics. Paint mountains, forests, and plains that alter combat dynamics and agricultural output, linking food supplies to population survival.

  • Hierarchies & empires. Form complex colonial empires, protectorates, and puppet alliances without homogenizing them into a single state.

  • Custom world parameters. Calibrate global tension, AI aggression, stability decay, and core simulation mechanics to create peaceful sandboxes or total anarchy.

Author Custom Campaigns

Elevate static scenarios into authored, story-driven campaigns. Build bespoke historical or fictional experiences with scripted dilemmas, custom progression systems, and distinct nation mechanics.

  • Script branching events. Craft historical turning points, global breaking news, and player dilemmas with complex triggers and cascading consequences.

  • Deep mechanical systems. Design custom technology trees, enactable laws, economic parameters, and starting military orders of battle.

  • Audiovisual customization. Integrate custom event illustrations, UI theme art, and original soundtracks to give your campaign a unique atmosphere.

  • Package & publish. Bundle your complete campaign package and distribute it worldwide via the Steam Workshop with one click.

Program Custom AI

Take worldbuilding to the code level. AI Studio empowers you to program how nations think, prioritize, and wage war using an integrated MiniScript engine. Coding is 100% optional: the game is fully playable without touching a line of code.

  • Interactive scripting lessons. Master the basics through built-in tutorials, write custom logic, and immediately observe your AI executing its strategy in live scenarios.

  • Arena duels & leaderboards. Pit your custom AI against player scripts in automated Arena battles, compete on global leaderboards, and share scripts via Steam Workshop.
