Coming Soon To Early Access

The developers of this game intend to release as a work in progress, developing with the feedback of players.

Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is playable but late game content, balancing, and visual candy are still in development. We are updating the content frequently and hope for active feedback from you, as our internal testing group was quite small. We plan to implement more features over the next few months and want to involve the community in the process.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to launch full scale later this year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We are planning a more diverse set of defense and monitoring systems that players can research, build, and deploy. New systems and balancing will place greater emphasis on tactical decisions and different approaches to increase overall gameplay and replayability value. In addition, existing hazards are to be expanded, such as the material composition of an asteroid, which adds new strategic depth, such as asteroid mining.

Many systems only have the minimum requirements for proper player feedback, which is to be improved in the full version with VFX, SFX, and general visual candy.

In addition, we are planning late game content featuring catastrophic events such as global killers (asteroids larger than 500 meters), specialized monitoring and defense systems and research upgrades.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core gameplay loop is fully implemented: players research, build, monitor, and defend against realistic space threats in a self-contained simulation system. Early Access offers about 1 hour of consecutive gameplay, during which players can explore strategic decision-making, resource management, and the core tension of orbital risk.

The Early Access version includes:
  • A set of monitoring and defense systems, including radar arrays, telescopes, and basic orbital tools, tailored to handle different kinds of threats and support varied playstyles.
  • Three main threat types: Asteroids, Coronal Mass Ejections, Space Debris with different consequences for the player.
  • A functioning research system, enabling players to unlock and improve systems over time.
  • Basic satellite customization, allowing players to select components and missions.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. The game will remain completely free.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We strongly believe that player feedback is essential to shape a meaningful and engaging experience—especially for a game built around systems, decision-making, and risk management.

During Early Access, we’re inviting players to help us refine key aspects of the game through direct feedback and discussion. Your input will be especially valuable in areas such as:

  • Balancing threat frequency (e.g. how often asteroids, CMEs, or space debris events occur)
  • Tuning difficulty curves and detection timing
  • Identifying pain points in the user experience, especially around UI, onboarding, and strategic clarity
  • Suggesting improvements or new system types that fit the realistic-but-fun tone of the game

We’re setting up a dedicated Discord community, where players can:
  • Join development discussions
  • Participate in feedback rounds and polls
  • Report bugs or suggest quality-of-life improvements
  • Share ideas and strategies with others

Our goal is to create a game that’s not only built on science and systems—but also shaped by the people who enjoy mastering them.”

About This Game

ESA S.H.I.E.L.D - Earth's Safety Starts with You!

Become head of the European Space Agency's Space Safety Department and protect Earth from real cosmic hazards like Asteroids, Space Debris, and Space Weather. This science-based Earth Defense Simulator combines tower defense, roguelite, and strategy elements to create a unique gameplay experience grounded in reality.

Before you can defend Earth, you need to see the threats coming. Build powerful ground-based monitoring systems to scan the skies for incoming danger—from massive solar storms to fast-moving asteroids.

But ground systems alone won’t be enough.

Send satellites into orbit and create a global network of satellites. The more eyes you have in space, the better your chances of survival.

Early detection is your best defense.

With the right data, you can assess each threat, determine its danger level, and launch the right countermeasures—before it’s too late.

Every successful mission makes you stronger.

Earn resources, unlock new technologies, and upgrade your systems to stay one step ahead of the next big space threat.

ESA S.H.I.E.L.D is more than a game: It’s a space mission!

It is developed as an outreach initiative for the European Space Agency to confront one of the most overlooked challenges in spacecraft: Space Safety. Play the game and support ESA in its mission to keep space safe and Earth protected.

🛸 Encounter Real Space Threats

Face the same dangers ESA deals with today—coronal mass ejections, asteroid impacts, and space debris. Each threat behaves differently—affecting systems in unique ways—and demands its own monitoring and defense approach. Every decision could be the difference between survival and orbital disaster.

🔬 Research Real Technologies

Unlock and implement real-world tech from past missions, current prototypes, and near-future plans. Build your strategy using actual science and engineering—from telescopes to deflection rockets.

🛰️ Build and Customize Satellites

Design your own space systems: choose components, mission goals, and orbital paths. Balance cost, stability, and lifetime to create your optimal satellite system.

📡 Monitor the Skies

Deploy and upgrade detection systems like telescopes and radar arrays. Expand your coverage, improve precision, and catch incoming threats before they hit.

🚀 Defend Earth and Infrastructure

Build and operate space-based defense systems to prevent catastrophic impacts. Launch interceptors, trigger system shutdowns, or send clean-up bots into decaying orbits.

🎯 Make Strategic Decisions Under Pressure

Every threat comes with uncertainty. React with limited data, weigh the risks, and choose between bold moves or conservative actions. Your judgment matters.
