What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The base game should cover most of the story, but since we are a small team, crafting the environment (along with bugfixing and general polish) may take some time. Community wishes, ideas and overall feedback will also be extremely valuable and we would like to tailor the content according to community preferences.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We will aim to provide significant update every two months at most. The game should be in early access for at least 6 months, probably around 9 or 10 total.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to expand the game map, implement more advanced interaction with environment, more complex puzzles, more content like items, legendary items, various mini stories and of course community ideas. Simple task/quest system is also in plan. A lot of the current environment is in placeholder state, so we will put effort into making it as close as possible to a well rounded town with clean design.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Early access version contains the town map in 70-80% finished state, with the main digging area and several washable properties. Even though the game is set in Bosnia, it is designed with topics that are universally relatable (or explained in game if not) so the non-Balkan players won't suffer trying to understand Balkan-specific jokes nor get stuck figuring out translations. The game's primary language will be English, with the additional option for Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian. Majority of the buildings can be entered and explored, and all of them contain items, hints, puzzles and/or town lore. Tool and food shops will be present, with around 20 washing and digging tools, dozens of usable items like food and keys, as well as numeous puzzles both above and below ground. Players can expect around 10-15 hours of gameplay, and around 20-25 hours for completionists and achievement chasers. Most of the main gameplay systems are either finished or almost finished and we plan to expand them even further.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, the game will have the same price. This is a long term project for us, with the plans for major updates even after v1.0. We want to make an affordable casual game that will prioritize fun and good design over profit.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Steam discussion boards should be the main source of community ideas and feedback. Most of the mechanics will be familiar to fans of digging and washing games, so we expect (and hope to implement) a lot of ideas that people wanted to see in those games but never got. We will actively monitor topics, feedback and respond in the shortest possible time. Surveys about future content for players will be common. If necessary, we will add other discussion options like subreddits and Discord servers. Most active community members with the best ideas can expect in-game recognition.”

About This Game

You are an "elite sanitation specialist" sent to a small Balkan town plagued by an unusual type of dirt and evacuated for the same reason. At first, you blame the second world laziness and simply aim to get the job done, but soon you start to notice unusual events taking place. The whole town seems to be covered in hydrophobic coating, revealing that the people were desperate before they left, and the dirt that covers some houses has very artificial looking placement. With only a handful of people left in the town (all shop owners or employees), you are free to roam the whole area, wash and explore empty houses and buildings, find clues and hints and get to know townfolk's deepest confessions and secrets left on numerous notes.

Armed with washing and digging tools, your your primary job will be to clean the more "stubborn" properties completely covered in dirt, as well as dig through the old fortress that was the first quarantined area, and is almost completely buried underground. While digging, you will find various items you can sell in a nearby shop. You'll be forced to often improvise (ie. make the rare instances of non-hydrophobic floor wet to conduct electricity between two points), upgrade your tools and solve puzzles in order to access secret areas with better rewards.

You will also be able to upgrade your character so you can dig and wash longer, move heavier obstacles, hold more money and items. Your inventory slots are limited (but upgradeable), so plan ahead and make sure you are ready because the town will eventually show you why it really had to be evacuated.

Dirtville is ultimately a casual sandbox game sprinkled with a bit of mystery. It will show you the tongue-in-cheek version of your average Balkan country while you clean up everything through satisfying mechanics in a vibrant, stylized suburb environment.
