What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Eco Ronin is a mechanically complete game, but we are planning to spend some more time polishing some of the mechanics and doing an artistic overhaul of the visual style.

The reason we have decided to release in Early Access is to give players the base game to play, make improvements based on feedback, and then publish the definitive version of the game with the complete art style.

During this early access stage our developers will be in contact with players over Discord to listen to suggestions as well!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately one year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is likely to be mechanically mostly the same as the Early Access version, but is likely to include some small quality of life changes based on feedback from the Early Access period.

The visual style of the game is planned to have a large overhaul in the definitive release. We intend to upgrade our game engine, reskin our character, redo our animations, reskin our enemies, and redo our environment art as well. The game will likely play mostly the same and contain the same objectives and challenges, but we intend for it to look and feel a lot different in terms of atmosphere.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“See the "About This" section. Eco Ronin is currently fully playable from start to finish. The full release of the game will contain an artistic overhaul but minimal changes to the actual gameplay content and length of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the price will increase slightly to reflect the improvement in the art style and polish.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a new Discord server where players can chat directly with the devs of this game and make requests, suggestions, and bug reports etc. We are a small team and this game is our passion project. We read and respond to every message where possible and love to hear what our players think of our game. We also love to watch streams!

Please reach out to us and let's start a conversation! We want your feedback!”

About This Game

Gameplay

Eco Ronin is a third person action-platformer roguelike with fast combat and vertical movement abilities. Grapple, jetpack, shoot, and slash through procedurally generated worlds in search of collectibles, bosses, and secret stages.

Features

  • Fast paced third person combat

  • Verticality (grapple, fast falling, jetpack gliding)

  • Inventory, consumables, resource management, crafting

  • Collect-a-thon -- philosophy pages and other rare pickups to find

  • Passive story telling and optional dialogue

Content

  • Tutorial: Learn how to grapple, glide, swing your sword, shoot, use your inventory, etc.

  • Celestial Trial (Advanced Tutorial): Learn advanced mechanics such as using your grapple as a slingshot to launch you across the map. Rapidly retry platforming challenges similar to Celeste. Access the Celestial Trial by using your jetpack to get the tower at the far back end of the tutorial (near the tutorial completion portal!)

  • Main Game: Progress through five procedurally generated floors by finding 3 crystals on each floor and unlocking the final door.

  • Boss Battle: Reach floor 5 to face the final boss.

  • Puzzle Dungeons: Each floor of the main dungeon has a unique puzzlebox-style dungeon reminiscent of the Zelda series. Navigate through the dungeon and solve the puzzles to be rewarded with an iceberg piece for an alternative ending.

  • Trial of the Gods: Collect all iceberg pieces and defeat the final boss to gain access to the Trial of the Gods -- the most difficult and advanced section of the game. Defeat this section and you're an Eco Ronin god!

  • Infinite Mode: Explore a procedurally generated endless world in search of 32 diamonds (reminiscent of Minecraft!) to unlock a door for your final achievement! Put your platforming to the test to traverse the difficult biomes, and make sure you find safety before night falls.

  • Hardcore Mode: Repay the main dungeon but with increased time dilation (everything moves faster), buffed enemies, and permadeath. Find checkpoints to save!

  • Wave Arena: Located on floor 4 of the main dungeon. Put your skills to the test!

Similar Games

  • Celeste -- similar fast paced precision platforming and respawn, but in 3D

  • Spelunky -- similar procedural dungeon generation, but in 3D

  • Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild -- similar 3D movement

  • RuneScape -- real-time inventory system to use items on the fly

  • Minecraft -- endless world extraction game mode with biomes, but with the combat and movement of something like Nier Automata or Breath of the Wild

Note from the developer

Thanks for your interest in Eco Ronin! This game is very close to my heart. Making this game, I wanted to capture the magic of exploring endless worlds like in Minecraft, but more advanced gameplay and movement similar to something like Breath of the Wild. I am also a fan of sci-fi games like Metroid Prime, and thus Eco Ronin was born!

It's not an easy game! The Tutorial and Celestial Trial are more linear and will guide you through learning the mechanics. But once you enter the main dungeon, it can get tricky to learn where to go and what to do! My advice: On each floor try to find the Exit House as soon as possible, there you will get access to the Scanner Arrow which will point you in the direction of the nearest crystal so you can find enough to open the exit door.

Also, don't be afraid to steal from Pasqualdo's shop! He might look scary, but he is also hostile to other enemies if they are tricked into hitting him! Use the unbiased aggro of the enemies to your advantage!

If you like this game, chances are you'll like my others too! Please check out Lost Temple Treasure and Running Robot Man 4. LTT is more story driven but with similar themes, and RRM4 is less story driven but with more fast gameplay and similar abilities!

Thanks!
