What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I, Andrew Craucamp, the sole developer on Akhena, am proud of what I've produced so far with little experience or funding and I'm eager to build a community and get them playing and providing feedback. While I currently have everything I need to complete the planned four kingdoms without the need for any further funding, a bit of budget could help improve the polish of the launch version.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“With the foundational work and majority of the game mechanics complete, as well as much of the first kingdom (Aeland), the remaining four kingdoms and their respective quest lines should take approximately two more years to complete, taking into account the current trajectory and progress momentum.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The plan is to have all four main kingdoms (Komadga, Sankesroh, Kithrym, and Aeland) completed along with their respective capital cities, satellite towns and settlements, and a number of dungeons in each kingdom. Additionally each kingdom should include their own main quest line. A number of side quests will likely also be ready by release or shortly thereafter. There are also two separate anarchic provinces with side quests planned as post-release updates and even a whole "hidden" kingdom. I plan to releases all these updates free of charge for anyone who has purchased the base game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At the moment the game is fully playable as a sandbox open world experience, players are able to roam the world map, randomly encounter enemies, earn experience, and gather loot. Additionally much of Aeland Kingdom is complete with about 30 to 60 minutes worth of Aeland's main quest line.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“During early access the price of the game is roughly 20% below the planned launch price. A sincere thank you to all who are willing to take the risk and make an early purchase, I will do everything in my power to ensure that the official release lives up to your expectations.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“In particular I'd like the community to contribute to balancing battles and differentiating enemies. Additionally I'd love it if story tellers could provide ideas for localised lore, and to solidify plausible and believable character personalities. But of course all suggestions and contributions are welcome and encouraged. I am a strong believer in collaborating with the community.”

About This Game

Akhena: Age of Evil is a large open-world JRPG with a western "CRPG" atmosphere and story. The primary gameplay loop being the exploration of a vast and dangerous world with a relatively rich history, and a light to moderate dose of "magik", yet rooted in gritty plausible realism. The story and characters are inspired by classic books like A Song of Ice and Fire and The First Law series, where morality is nuanced and defined by cultural bias. And "evil" is merely a manifestation of duty, entitlement, or wayward good intentions.

Akhena's brutal history is filled with cultural distrust and vicious racism the Free War put a sharp end to the ancient kingdoms of Akhena. For over 1000 years the mighty Kitmera (anthropomorphic felines) have been the indisputable rulers of the continent. The Word of God, the sacred religious texts, declares that the Kitmera and their loyal nobility are the anointed guardians over the continent and all it's harmera (human-like) inhabitants. The Kitmera rule with a firm but compassionate hand, yet they grapple with the decision of whether or not to outlaw the seditious religions that bring their legitimacy into question.

Six classes for each of the three harmera races, and two genders for each.
The story will also include over 70 recruitable characters as part of the four main quest lines. In early access there are only a handful of recruitable characters but all the main characters are ready to play.

7 factions
