Leaving Early Access: July 2026

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This game is in the late stages of development and is going into labor. Early Access allows players to peek under the hood and support the final hurdles of the game's development.
Fathoms has faced a rocky development cycle, pushing back release window after release window that spanned over several years of rough water. Early Access offers an avenue for the game to be released as a work-in-progress instead of a fully completed version as a way of "ripping the band aide off" instead of remaining in development limbo, or worse, becoming a shelved project that would be revisited after another one is completed.
Early Access gives Fathoms a more incremental release stage as a way to help support the full completion of the game for a more immediate release window. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The official version should be completed by mid-July.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“More areas, weapons, dialogue, music, and less bugs. ”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Nearing the end of development. Mostly everything in the game is laid out with some missing holes throughout with more prominent ones in the later portions. Some Game Over loops in the later areas are yet to properly reset causing game breaking area glitches, as well as large gaps in the second half of the game's story involving missing dialogue sequences and music that are still being worked on.
There are areas currently left out due to still being developed, making the current pacing of the game's end be more condensed instead of being spread out in the game world: which will be the full game's intention for level/world structure. Some bombable walls are currently disabled, this is because the areas for accessing the Final Boss area and the fourth weapon are still being worked on, bringing the Final Boss area into another section for a more condensed final act as well as a current hold off on acquiring the fourth weapon. ”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. Full price will remain the same.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Players will get to see a behind the curtain view of the game's earlier version. During the release of the game's earlier demo, one game obstacle had already changed to another one for the official game which I have shown in real-time be changed via dev log. During the current state of the unfinished work, I'm sure there will be handful of things (from simple changes to strange oddities) that will only be found in the work-in-progress version that will either be changed or fixed in the full release.
Due to certain computer problems I've been having, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do more dev logs or live streams, but if my computer is still capable and doesn't break, an announcement will be made that livestream dev logs will be coming (though I can't promise this for certain, but here's hoping) for live player/dev discussions while showing in-engine progress in real time. ”

About This Game

Fathoms is a 2D vehicle-based action-adventure game set in a deep underwater facility. After being broken out of a cell by a talking dolphin with an eyepatch, you fall into a labyrinthian abyss as you avoid all manner of obstacles from security systems to the inner workings of the facility, and the operatives running it.

GAMEPLAY

In this game, you will pick up weapons and upgrades for your ship as you progress through the facility with the main goal of escaping.

Items and ammo pickups are limited (much like classic survival horror games). Only shoot when you feel you have to.

Other than managing ammo for weapons and energy for your ship's life gauge, you will also need to manage your ship's oxygen. Throughout the facility there are many spikes that can puncture your ship, making your oxygen gauge drop. Much like loss of energy, a full loss of oxygen will result in a Game Over, bringing the player back to the first area.

STORY

In the dark reaches of a stretching ocean, bizarre and evil operations are conducted by a ruthless organization with only one single goal . . . to control. In a place where only they would know, filled with all manner of contraband in a dark lonely corner of the ocean, something sinister was taking place . . . and you have to escape from it.
