The T-80U-E1 tank (Object 219AS-1) was developed as a modernization variant of the T-80BV tank using turrets from the T-80UD. The prototype underwent trials in 2002-2003, and based on the results of these trials it was approved for serial production in 2003. A distinctive feature of this model is the second-generation “Plisa” thermal imager with a French matrix from Thales.

Its 1250 horsepower engine allows the T-80U-E1 to reach a maximum speed of up to 70 km/h and a reverse speed of up to 12 km/h. It is armed with a powerful 125 mm 2A46M-1 cannon paired with a 7.62 mm machine gun and a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun on the turret roof. The ammunition load includes HEATFS, a high-explosive fragmentation shell, and APFSDS shells, plus the ability to launch anti-tank guided missiles as well. Additionally, the T-80U-E1 is equipped with an engine smoke screen system, smoke grenade launchers, a laser rangefinder and a thermal imager for the gunner.
