“I am a solo developer working on this project in my free-time. I have a complete roadmap, and an end quality goal for this game, however completing the feature-set is slowed down by my limited time.

In order to start building a community, and get early feedback, I think Early Access is the right path.”

“The current plan is releasing the final version during 2024, but this isn't set in stone.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here's a short list based on the roadmap until the final release. This isn't a complete list, rather the most visible changes that are planned:

  • More content in general:
    • Different enemy types with unique abilities.
    • A unique boss at the end of each chapter (and more chapters).
    • More terrain types with unique mechanics.
  • Additional game modes.
  • Game difficulty options.
  • In-game collectibles.
  • Achievements, trading cards.
  • Iterating on player feedback.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“
  • Supports Windows (7 or newer) and Linux.
  • Supports keyboard and game controllers input. The Steam Input API is not integrated, but SDL is. SDL is a cross-platform library support hundreds of controllers and joysticks.
  • Customizable:
    • in-game look for your avatar,
    • window resolution,
    • language (7 options),
    • input bindings.
  • Local co-op with 2 players.
  • The first chapters and levels can be played with multiple enemy and obstacle types alternating.
  • The same boss at the end of every chapter. Later, each chapter will have a unique boss at the end.
  • Skill tree with multiple paths and mechanics to unlock.
  • Treasure chests can be discovered with bonus content.
  • Healing mechanics.

“Yes, the game is available on a lowered price during Early Access. The price will be somewhat increased when the game leaves Early Access reflecting the added content, and improved quality.”

About This Game

CrabbleUp is a laid-back, retro-inspired roguelite.

You are a small hermit crab, and you embark on a journey to explore the depth of the seas. Level-up to strengthen your existing abilities, and learn new ones! The skill tree is hidden, the levels are procedurally generated, each playthrough is unique, and enemies hit hard! Can you beat all the bosses, and live to tell the tale?

The view is isometric 2.5D using hand-drawn graphics. You navigate a maze in tiled levels with lots of details, designed for full-screen mode. Although you can switch to smaller resolutions if you want a windowed experience. Multi-monitor setups are also supported.

There are multiple camera modes to fit your preference, each keeping all players in the screen at any time.

Unique playthroughs




You can play solo, or together with someone else. Solo sessions are independent from co-op ones, so you don't have to worry about starting a new session just yourself when your partner isn't available. Each session is random generated, and different from previous ones!

You can use a keyboard, or game controllers to navigate the menus and play the game. The only place where a keyboard is required is when creating Profiles with custom names. The default name will be your Steam profile name, if you want to skip the keyboard completely.

Your shell can be customized from many options, and there will be more to come in following updates.

Challenges




You will meet many different enemies, who require observing their movements, and approaching them carefully. However, not everything moving is there to hurt you! There are also entities to heal, and entities to passively obstruct your way. Each chapter features its own unique boss at the end, which will really test your skills, and maneuvering finesse!
