Battle your friends in a real time card game where wizards sling spells at each other. Has a unique spot as something in between a card game and a fighting game. Games usually take 1-5 minutes, depending on the characters that get picked.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I would like to be able to get feedback on what people like about the characters, as I continue to add more characters and mechanics. I also would like to be able to replace the programmer art and sound effects with higher quality content, but I want to make sure the core gameplay is fun without people just being wowed by nice art/sounds. Lastly I want to add more complex characters later (I actually have finished characters that are more complicated) but I want to see how the simple characters are received first.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Probably about a year”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“It should have much better art and sounds. Additionally, I plan to have more maps and characters (I currently have 4 additional characters and 1 additional map that are still in internal testing, but I have ideas for a bunch more as well). Lastly, I hope to make a story mode and some Co-op content, but those are stretch goals.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“There are 4 playable characters and 1 playable stage. You can play couch co-op with a friend or with remote play. You can play against a pretty basic AI, and you can make 2 AI players play against each other. You can view the controls, but you cannot customize your controls yet. The game still has programmer art and sound effects.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I do plan to increase the price on the full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I mainly would like to use community feedback to get data on perceived balance, as well as finding out which characters/spells people have been enjoying. Additionally, as I add more complicated characters, I would like to get an idea if the community finds it more fun to play with wacky spells and gimmicks, or if they prefer the more core game play experience with the simpler characters.”

About This Game

Cast or Pass started as a game jam project that I thought was a ton of fun and tried to make into a full game. Pick a character with a pre-built deck of spells that you can use to battle against your friends. Game is in real time with each card being balanced between power and cast time. Decks are only shuffled once at the start so you can try to gain an advantage by figuring out when your opponent has no defensive spells and throwing out your strongest magic to punish those openings.

I've found that this game has a bit of a learning curve where players will start out by just throwing out spells and trying to overwhelm their opponent. People are kind of slow to change of that strategy because you get a little worse if you think about your cards too long, but it's an important step to take to become a master and be able to throw out spells both quickly and strategically, so don't get discouraged.

I've got a bunch more characters with new spells on the way but I get bottle-necked by the art and sound for them, so they won't be out for a bit, but just know that they will come.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Wizards talk trash and throw fireballs in a fight to the death. Pixel art so it might be fine but better safe than sorry.
