What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I am currently the only developer of this game. I work on it in my free time, and getting more people engaged in the development process would be very helpful and fun!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Difficult to say, but there are lots of core features left to implement and I do not think that the full release will be closer than 3 years from now.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access is currently not ready to be played, as I have yet to add some things, polish and combine the seperate systems and features I have into a solid gameplay loop. What will be present on the early alpha release are atleast the following features:

* Character Creation - Facial hair/hair-styles (25 to mix and match) and sliders for sizes on different body parts.
* Map Generation - 2 different biomes, one with soft and one with hard bottom.
* Combat - on the seafloor and in the water, against crabs, fish and worms (three enemies with vastly different behaviours).
* Weapons - a dagger, a spear, and a speargun.
* Echosystem establishment - at least 3 different algae to plant (grass algae, bullwhip kelp, and sawtooth kelp), one invasive species (sea urchin), and one recruitable species (something triggerfish-like).
* Resource management - Health, stamina, soft tissue (for algae planting, healing and taming), hard tissue (for hard structures such as weapons).
* Online co-op.

For the full release I would like to add:

* More character creation options
* Clothes.
* Inventory management
* Talent trees for three different classes to mix and match between. One focused on pets, one on mutations, and one on handheld weapons.
* Player mutations such as pincers, mermaid tails and tentacles, and a system for unlocking them.
* More weapons and abilities such as "poisonous ink spray" and "piranha swarm".
* Atleast 4 more biomes - seamounts, marine trenches, brine mires and worm plains.
* Atleast 1 boss per zone, and concequences within the world when overcoming them.
* A whole lot of more species to fight and recruit to your echosystems.
* Coral structures to build - for farming, storage, protection, NPC shelter, and more!
* Some graphical reworks to improve overall coherency and quality”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Not accessible, as I have yet to polish and combine the separate systems and features I have into a solid gameplay loop. The currently existing systems and features are most of the ones I mentioned in the previous answer:

* Character Creation - Facial hair/hair-styles (25 to mix and match) and sliders for sizes on different body parts.
* Map Generation - 2 different biomes, one with soft and one with hard bottom.
* Combat - on the seafloor and in the water, against crabs, fish (no worms yet).
* Weapons - a dagger (spear, speargun are not yet implemented).
* Echosystem establishment - at least 3 different algae to plant (grass algae, bullwhip kelp, and sawtooth kelp), one invasive species (pet recruitment not implemented yet).
* Resource management - Health, stamina, soft tissue (for algae planting, healing and taming), hard tissue (for hard structures such as weapons).
* Online co-op.

Hopefully I will consider it ready for early alpha release before 2024.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. To partake in early access is incredibly valueable to me, so any who is kind enough to do so will get the game cheaper than when it comes to full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through social media (mostly Instagram and Facebook for the time being) and Steam.”

About This Game

Descended is an action RPG that treats ideas of deep sea settlements and genetic manipulation.

The player's avatar is a human who has recently arrived at the bottom of an alien sea with one task in mind - to survive and keep revolutionary science safe from evil men on the planet's surface. This new science is also the key to survive the abyss, as it allows the player avatar to swiftly morph its body, alter genes, and tailor ecosystems. The seafloor is procedurally generated and will contain biomes such as Volcanic Trenches, Brine Mires, Worm Plains, and Seamounts.

In addition to the fun and games, Descended intends to incorporate and passively teach marine and environmental science by weaving gameplay mechanincs around concepts such as "marine snow", "source populations" and "invasive species". Its flora and fauna will be inspired by Earth's.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

There's a horror element when you venture into the darkness in Descended. You might get lured by an anglerfish or ambushed by a burrowed worm, and they can be scary. This is currently not in the build.
