What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I have been developing the game for about 2 years now. Being an independent developer, I am passionate about designing and implementing the features with the help of the community. Many of the features you see in the game are based on the feedback of those taking part in playtests. Early Access will let me share an early version of the game with a broader audience, and hopefully build a community as we go!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until all of the core systems are implemented and polished. I am expecting the stay in Early Access for a few years at least as we iterate over the game, improve on the design and make sure the experience is scalable and stable as we add more players.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version will be a playable, fun, well-rounded experience. For the full release, I plan to expand on the non-core systems (potentially include features like sea travel) and the playable area (if we have enough players, we may consider moving beyond a single island). My development philosophy is to slowly add features based on player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently playable with some of the core features implemented - including combat, crafting, player progression, NPC conversations, plot ownership and house decoration, custom items, cooperative quests, and trade.

The core game loop is working, and there are some cooperative aspects implemented. You can explore a part of the island, specialize your character, collect unique items, and craft around ~50 unique item types. The game features get added quite quickly and are often iterated on, so feel free to check our Discord for the latest patch notes and project updates!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will likely increase throughout development. I am developing the game in a sustainable way (funding it myself), and am keen to keep the playtests free. As the server costs increase and more players get added, I will start monetizing the game to keep the development going. Being a cooperative social game, it is my goal to make sure the monetization doesn't disrupt the game balance but instead makes it a nicer experience for both you and those around you.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is a foundational pillar of the development process. Community feedback is invaluable and I hope I can expand the community through Steam! The community building aspects are one of my favourite parts of making a game, so I plan to involve the community in helping design, prioritize, and test the core features of the game.”

About This Game

Inspired by the social MMOs of the early 2000s, Frontiers Reborn is a massively multiplayer roleplaying game where social interaction and collaboration come first. Join hundreds of other players to live out a small but meaningful role in an immersive world - a sandbox for you to explore and call home.

Feel free to Wishlist the game and visit our Discord. We hold regular playtests - and being made by a solo dev, I greatly appreciate any feedback you can give!

Novel and Exciting Roles: Combat? That's just one of many!

Take on specializations that keep the society running, including:
  • Politics and City Building
  • Medicine and Camping
  • Religion and Legal Systems
  • Taverns and Entertainment
  • Marketing and Event Management
  • Trade and Beast Handling

In addition to 21 unique crafting disciplines and combat specializations. The game focuses on letting you pick a niche and roleplay a story regardless of how small or grand it might be. Sometimes the tale of a barmaid sweating to find the right combination of dishes to serve the local nobility is as gripping as delving into a dungeon.

Fully Custom Items: Everything you see is made by others!

The variety of roles is made possible by the fact that every item in the game is player-crafted, and every item is unique.

No two ingredients are the same. The strawberries you collect in the highlands may fit the same crafting recipes as the ones you find by the beach, but they will have different properties that impact your crafting outcomes. Each item has a unique "DNA", a score across 12 properties that is imprinted when the item is first harvested. When you then use your iron ore or wolf meat in a recipe, the properties get combined and propagate into your outcome items. This makes crafting a core part of the game world, not an afterthought. As with all the other systems, it's designed to be easy to pick up, but requires and rewards careful planning to produce the best of the best.

Cooperative Play: Grow ideas into metropolises.

Many of the systems let you have a broader impact through local actions.

Politicians set taxes and invest into city-wide upgrades, tavern owners source dishes from chefs and with the help of servers entertain the patrons, healers diagnose ailments and carry out surgeries to avoid life-threatening conditions, citizens purchase property and have architects design houses that the decorators then furnish. This lets you come together as a community, make meaningful friendships and see the cities you join grow through several tiers, unlocking new features and areas to explore.

Indie Development: Your feedback gets implemented!

Frontiers Reborn has been a passion project of mine for over a decade now.

As someone who loves roleplay and social games, I am building a game I'd love to one day play myself - a place where people can meet, have fun, work on things together and make memories you'll remember. Early in 2010s, I started modding and creating Minecraft and Starbound servers, and with the help of other volunteers, we created one of the most ambitious, roleplay-first communities out there. Around 2018, I decided to expand on the ideas and try to make them into a stand-alone game. This lets me implement experimental features quickly, and integrate rich social systems that would be difficult to mod into existing frameworks.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The game uses real-time AI models to simulate immersive conversations with the non-player characters you meet in-game. Each character has a hand-written backstory that impacts how the conversation goes. This technology complements the manual worldbuilding and lore writing, and I would love your feedback on how well you think this works!

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The game has mild, fantasy-themed mature content. The story is set in a fictional land similar to ancient Greece. This means you will encounter things like taverns serving alcohol, bandits stealing gold, or tavern companions that dance for the visitors. I also plan to add NPC relationships, like dating, romance, and mentions of sex.
None of the content is explicit, so you will not encounter nudity, nor excessive violence/gore.
My game design philosophy is to create a welcoming space that introduces mature topics tastefully.
