What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The basic game idea is playable but we're interested in getting more feedback from gamers on the core mechanics, difficulty curve, and powerup capabilities. Additionally, all the art is placeholder and we're hoping to upgrade the art significantly towards a full release of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“1 year”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Many more levels, more Reactor powerups, a refined scoring system and leaderboard, song-level DLC.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“4 playable levels and 2 basic tutorials.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The early access demo is free and the full game will be between paid once we add more gameplay and song-levels.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a discord server community up and running and our hope it to incorporate gamer feedback into improvements in the overall game experience.”

About This Game

AUDION is an abstract, single-player arcade-style VR game focused on “spatial strategy” and fast-paced, physical gameplay. Think Asteroids meets Rez meets Geometry Wars in 3D. We're currently in Early Access and pretty early-on in development. We're looking for passionate players to help give us feedback so we can improve, tune, debug, and upgrade the game to be as fun as possible.

The game currently features 4 frenetic levels of increasing difficulty and complexity, and a powerup load-out feature for strategic gameplay combinations and replayability.

AUDION is currently Early Access and we're hosting this public beta to get some feedback from real players. We're hoping your input will help us improve the core game mechanics and the overall gameplay experience. Please join our Discord server to leave feedback, ask questions, log bugs.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Immersive, first-person, physical gameplay

  • Focus on spatial awareness and strategy

  • Experiment with Reactor combos (powerups) to maximize impact in each level

  • Abstract geometric aesthetic with lots of audio-reactive graphics

  • Menus and tutorial localized into Japanese

  • Electrifying soundtrack by Symbion Project that builds as you play

DESIGN OVERVIEW:

  • No guns: Player bond, attract and repel Ions, which are dangerous musical objects floating in space. The goal is to split them into smaller and smaller Ions to clear the level.

  • Skills: Audion builds targeting accuracy and spatial strategy skills, but without the guns.

  • Arcade: Levels ramp to frenetic levels quickly, keeping the exciting gameplay on a tight loop.

  • Physicality: Using the physicality of VR, players grab, pull, swing, smash, deflect and rip Ions. Not a game for sitting down!

  • Impact: Unlockable powerups have major impact on each play-through, combining to create powerful game events with fun, explosive visuals.

DEVELOPER OVERVIEW: Speed of Dark Studios (aka Kasson Crooker) is a small indie studio based in Japan and focuses on music-based VR experiences and indie games.

Kasson has 20 years of game industry experience, primarily as Audio Director and Project Director on numerous AAA titles from Harmonix, including Guitar Hero 1 & 2, RockBand 1 & 2, and Dance Central 1 & 2. He created and designed a PC/Mac audiogame on Steam called Rocococo which has no visuals and you use your ears to play and win. He founded legendary synthpop band Freezepop and composed all the music for AUDION under his Symbion Project moniker. He also released 2 immersive VR-Music apps called (m)ORPH and Saturnine which you can get for free on SideQuestVR or AppLab for Quest.

Ben Lane is the Lead Engineer and additional Game Designer, having shipped games and experiences on Oculus Go, Meta Quest, phones and desktop for companies like Meta, HP, MLB and others.
