What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The world that HP Lovecraft created is vast, and filled with places and people and creatures of all kinds! From the ruins of the Forgotten City to the Plateau of Leng, and even outward into the frozen darkness of Yuggoth and Beyond The Wall Of Sleep.

With so many locations, monsters, items and artifacts, it is not feasible for us to include it all in version 1 of the game. But also, we want community feedback, telling us what they like and what they don't, and helping to guide the game's development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Content will continue to be added as long as the game has an active playerbase asking for more. But in terms of planned content, it should take us until at-least Q3 2024.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

NEW DEPARTMENTS
Use the Engineering Department to create new machines, like a Pabodie drill to crack through solid rock beneath Antarctica, or a radio tower to get word of strange events from around the world.
Use the History Department to trace down the origins of ancient books and charms to their origins.
All Departments will have classes for those departments, and new rooms!

MORE LOCATIONS!
Obviously we don't want to tell you which ones we have planned (finding them is half the fun!) But of-course, new locations means new items and artifacts to study, and more knowledge to unloick!

MORE ENEMIES
More Locations also means new enemies.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

Miskatonic University is playable!

Systems that are working:
(NOTE: Miskatonic University is an evolving game and some of these features may be revisited / updated)
  • Players can run Miskatonic University! Build new rooms, or demolish them. Rooms have different requirements and will function well if their needs are satisfied.
  • 17 different room types can be placed, from student life (dorms, cafeteria) to academics (lecture hall, bio lab), to utility (electrical room, boiler room)
  • Hire and fire staff, plan curriculum, and accept new students!
  • Students and staff alike go through their day, attending classes and performing tasks while managing their needs during downtime.
[*} Players can direct Professors to work on Research Projects and unlock new technologies and expeditions.
  • Students gain XP and their skills level-up. Student level influences their effectiveness on research and expeditions.
  • 4 unlockable sites around the world for "expeditions" to collect Eldritch Artifacts!
  • Currently supported Majors: Art (Painting), Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Paleontology, and Archeology.
  • SOME Eldritch artifacts can be recovered and studied ;)

Systems that are WIP or Planned:
  • Character diversity: More heads, hairstyles, clothing and skin tones.
  • Some character effects are not implemented yet, such as Sanity and Hygiene.
  • Character AI improvements to prioritize emergency needs.
  • Character "Quirks"
  • 13 additional rooms (many more will be added, particularly in the variety of Academic Rooms as more majors are added!)
  • MANY more expedition locations!
  • MUCH larger tech tree!
  • Story events!
  • "Missions" (time-based non-critical quests that provide unique bonuses)
  • Plans for additional Majors: Sculpture, Structural Engineering, Anthropology, Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Surgery, and Astronomy. (We have ideas for additional Majors, but want to gauge interest.)
  • MANY more eldritch artifacts!

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Early adopters help us to build a better game, and as a massive THANK YOU to all of you who put your faith in us to build the best Miskatonic University management simulator that we can, you will receive the game at a discounted rate.

As new features are added, we plan to raise the rate gradually.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“With so many fascinating places to explore, so many abominable artifacts to discover, so many creatures to capture and study, so many unspeakable threats to overcome... we will need the help of the community to direct us. TELL US WHAT YOU WANT US TO BUILD, and guide our production to making the Miskatonic University management game that you want to play! (Core Lovecraft only, please. Expanded mythos are not necessarily in the public domain).

About This Game

In Miskatonic University, you are the headmaster of a new University that is destined for greatness... if it can survive.

The world is in turmoil. The festering corpse of a prehistoric abomination long thought to be extinct washed up from untold depths onto the shores of Japan. Police arrested a voodoo cult in Louisiana as they sacrificed humans at the foot of a grotesque totem to an unearthly god. Whispered rumors of the shifting sands of the Desert of Araby disgorging the ruins of a long forgotten city with structures of.... inhuman proportions.

A pall has fallen over the earth. Something is happening. These events (and many more) are connected somehow. But with a new generation of talented scientists and engineers, doctors and philosophers, historians and artists... perhaps the great secrets will be revealed!

In Miskatonic University, you build and run HP Lovecraft's (in)famous college in this real-time, ant-farm view, management simulation game.

  • Establish Departments of Art, Science, Engineering, Medicine, and more.
  • Accept students with a wide variety of skills and quirks, and cultivate their learning by providing the best professors, facilities and amenities.
  • Happy students excel at their classes and are more effective on research projects, and successful students raise the prestige of your University.
  • Send Students and Professors on expeditions to sites around the world to retrieve strange and powerful artifacts, to be studied and understood.
  • Harness knowledge to develop technologies that allow you to investigate further, dig deeper, and probe into truths not intended for human eyes.
  • Greater discoveries lift the prestige of the University. More prestige means more student intertest, more grants, and more opportunities.
  • Beware however of the influence of madness. Proximity to eldritch things warps the mind. Those who slip into insanity become.... unpredictable.... and may attempt to sabotage your school.
  • Other evils lurk in the shadows as well, and will attempt to frustrate your exploration into the truth. Cultists, monsters, and more, await their time to strike.
