What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

TLDR: If you can temporarily tolerate some unpolished art assets and no multiplayer, there'll be many hours of single-player gameplay to enjoy on Early Access release. In the meantime, please wishlist to help us realize our big vision for this game. Join the Formation today!

The Early Access version of Formation will have a substantial single-player 'Career' mode. There'll also be a 'Free-fly' mode with many challenges to complete and secrets to find. Presently, the mechanics of the game are near-complete — the flight model physics and core game-loop are finely tuned for a fun VR experience right now.

As you might have gathered, our aim is to start with a complete single-player mode and refined game mechanics to provide a solid foundation for further development. Where the 'early-access' comes in mainly relates to the addition of multiplayer and finalized art assets. We plan to include an online mode where two squads perform a routine in the same airspace and compete to see which team can execute their maneuvers with higher precision. We would like to release early to get broad feedback before tackling the development of this mode.

As we're sure many of you know, creating art assets is time-consuming and labour intensive. This is especially true given the scale of the mega-structure architecture that feature in Formation's missions. Currently, some assets are placeholders that are resolved enough to build a mission around but lack secondary and tertiary detail. It should be stated that these unrefined assets don't take anything away from the single-player experience in terms of gameplay — they just don't look super nice ATM. These will be completed during Early Access.

Polishing the visual assets and including multiplayer are our two primary goals for our Early Access mission. On a broader note, we're committed to listening to your feedback, iterating on your feedback, and seeing this project out until final release. Our team is passionate about our craft and we are excited to build a unique and high quality VR experience that stands out from the rest.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“If all goes to plan, Formation is expected to be in Early Access for 1 year. Please be aware that we might have to shift this timeframe if unforeseen issues arise.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For the full version we plan to include online play and finalized, polished art assets. Also, Formation will be refined further in all areas based on feedback from the Steam community. This will inevitably have an impact on the final product.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

Formation in Early Access can be considered in the late-Alpha phase. It will be 'vertical' in targeted areas to ensure players get a satisfying and high-value experience despite its mid-development state.

Specifically, the flight mechanics and moment-to-moment game loop are highly evolved and very close to what we feel is a release-ready state*. The single-player campaign will be complete consisting of many hours of gameplay.

*we certainly have the room and the will to change these features based on community consensus if need be

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will most likely increase to reflect the content and quality of the final version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will include Early Access players in the development process primarily through Steam's Community Hub section where we will actively check-in on a day to day basis. Further to this, a Discord server is certainly an option — but this will depend on demand.

Thorough testing is already a core part of our dev process and has helped us create an experience that — even at this early stage — we are very proud of. We look forward to going public and hearing the Steam community's feedback and ideas to make this game even better.”

THE 'FORMATION' EXPERIENCE

'Formation' is a VR game where you pilot a powerful combat aircraft as part of a revered formation squadron. Set in a futuristic, Earth-like utopia, 'Formation' features a unique core-gameplay experience that focusses on intense formation flying. Besides fun, addictive gameplay, 'Formation' strives for visceral immersion by providing silky-smooth visuals, a cohesive art style and muscular audio.

3...2...1...MARK!

The moment-to-moment gameplay in Formation mixes arcade flight-sim (like Ace Combat) and 'rhythm-based' genres. Execute maneuvers right on the MARK as notified via your FORMHUD advanced heads-up display. Successfully execute a series of maneuvers to complete a routine. Challenge your ability to stay focussed and combo-chain maneuvers as structural beams whip closely past your canopy. Formation presents a new and addictive slant on flying games.

THE BULLSHARKS

Long ago, war ravaged the planet. Driven back in to the sea, the forces of the Allied Planetary Defence (APD) were facing defeat. In a last-ditch effort one of the few remaining air units — the Bullsharks — almost singlehandedly turned the tide of war. Their formation strikes and heroism are legendary.

Though the guns and missiles once at the behest of APD aviators have long since been decommissioned, the 'Bullsharks' continue to operate — albeit in a non-lethal capacity. Sporting events, commemorations, celebrations, and the occasional airshow are where you will find the present-day '7th' in operation today. The sight of the Bullsharks serves as a reminder of the fierce air-battles of a war that has long since ended, the triumph of the victors, and the glorious fallen.

For those too young to remember the war, the 7th serve a new purpose. What were once instruments of death and destruction have now been reborn as symbols of high intelligence and advanced engineering. In an age of prosperity, the once deadly machines of a century-old conflict now serve to motivate and inspire budding engineers, scientists and pilots as they loudly — but peacefully — thunder through the skies above Ocea.

WELCOME, PILOT

Now that you're up to speed on the backstory, let's discuss this year's mission schedule. Truth be told, 'Air Command' is a little worried about some of the planned routines because of how risky they are. Ocea's mayor isn't too happy either.

Maybe promoting Raiker to Captain and putting him in charge of the squadron wasn't such a smart idea! So, it looks like you're in luck, pilot — the routines this year are going to be more extreme than ever and you've graduated flight school at just the right time. If you play your cards right, you might even be able to sneak in a tower buzz or two.

First things first, you'll need to get your head around the FORMHUD system which will keep you synchronized with your formation squad. Commander Burns himself is expecting you for basic flight training at 0600 hours.

It's time to suit up and get your G-face on!
