Background Story

Legend has it that there are three realms in the world: Heaven, the Mortal World, and the Underworld. Heaven is the abode of immortals, angels, and saints. The Mortal World is where humans and all living creatures reside. When humans die, their souls leave the body and are guided to the Underworld, where all their deeds—good and evil—are settled once and for all.

The gateway to the Underworld is called the Ghost Gate. After passing through it, you first stand for judgment, where your deeds are weighed. Those with great virtues ascend to heaven to become immortals or gods. Those whose time has not yet come are returned to the Mortal World to live on. Souls of neither great merit nor sin may rest peacefully or, after drinking Miss Meng’s soup to forget their past lives, cross the Bridge of Forgotten to enter the Six Paths of Reincarnation. Those guilty of the most heinous crimes are cast into the Eighteen Levels of Hell—a prison and torture ground of the Underworld. If you ever descend there, you must endure at billion years of torment before you may be reborn.

King Yama rules the Eighteen Levels of Hell, aided by numerous judges and an army of imps who serve as guards and jailers. But King Yama, once the upholder of judgment and order, has conspired with certain malevolent deities (role play by the player), releasing all the most wicked spirits from their eternal torment in a bid to overthrow and restructure the very balance of the Underworld. What is the conspiracy? You are about to find out.
