What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Releasing in Early Access allows us to get feedback sooner and incorporate that into the direction of the game. It also allows to take bigger swings and make larger changes based on player reactions than we could after our 1.0 launch. As a visual novel, the story of WCTF is the game, and it will be exciting to craft that story along with the community of players that finds and supports the game in Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“WCTF will be released a series of episodes. We plan to release the full version after 1) all of those episodes have been completed, and 2) we've finished some additional features for 1.0. We estimate that will take us until the end of 2024 or early 2025.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The finished game (including all episodes) will be playable by the end of Early Access. The full version will add some additional features and include general bug fixes and polish. There are some other features that we know we want to add eventually (e.g. localization and full voice acting), but those would come in releases after 1.0 and the end of Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, two chapters are fully playable for free. This is half of the first episode. We intend to the release the second half of the episode in early 2024.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“As of now, there is no plan to change the price of episodes once we leave Early Access. The first two chapters will always be available for free, and then we will ask players to purchase additional episodes as DLC.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“For now, we'll be watching and participating in discussions here in the Steam community for this game. We don't have any immediate plans to create external community channels (e.g. a Discord server), but that's certainly something we could add in the future if there's interest.”

About This Game

We Carry the Fire is a visual novel set in a world that is slowly ending. Every few years after the new moon disappears from the night sky, it will return red, and when that red moon is full every town, village, and city in the Empire will be attacked by mindless, spectral monsters called Shades. The only weapon the people have in their defense is Fire, an ever-burning white flame believed to be a gift from God Himself.

Players follow Ashe, a young person whose red eyes mark him as an outcast. When a new red moon appears, Ashe volunteers to deliver Fire to a remote farming village that would otherwise be destroyed under the full moon. This mission will be particularly dangerous because it requires him to cross the Forest, a mysterious wilderness believed to be home to malicious spirits and terrifying monsters that otherwise live only in myth.

But Ashe will not face these dangers alone. He is joined by a party of other outcasts like himself: Blaise a former knight excommunicated from her order for an alleged heresy; Kol, an Alfar of the Forest exiled from his clan for breaking a taboo; and Luz, a magical prodigy expelled from her university for stealing secrets from restricted texts.

Their success is far from guaranteed. Rather, each of them joins this mission knowing they will likely fail, and failure means death. Yet they are each willing to accept that great risk for their own reasons.

The trials they face in their journey will reopen old wounds and push each of them to their breaking point, and to find a way forward they will each be forced to let go of something important.
