Coming Soon To Early Access

The developers of this game intend to release as a work in progress, developing with the feedback of players.

Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Our opinion is that the best games are developed with a lot of player feedback. This is especially true for open ended building games. We believe that Early Access is an ideal way to solicit player involvement (and funding!) while being transparent about the rough edges that still exist in the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to spend about a year in Early Access but do not have a concrete timeline.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to improve the overall polish of the game, and we also plan to add more "content" such as unit types, news events, tech tree nodes, music tracks, etc.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Please see the "ABOUT THIS GAME" section for a description of the current features in the game. Everything in that description is currently implemented.

The build is currently relatively stable but does occasionally crash or exhibit "broken" behavior. The game is not finely balanced and some units may seem unreasonably expensive or difficult to build. The tutorial experience exists but is still being refined - it may feel somewhat confusing at first. Some of the planned late-game content is not fully implemented, and is marked as such in the tech tree.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not plan to change the price when we exit Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We involved the community in our development process before entering Early Access and plan to continue this practice. Please send feedback!! Currently most of our community activity takes places in our Discord channel, but we plan to monitor the Steam discussion boards as well (and email is always open).”

About This Game

Extrapolation is a building game about the logistics of filling the solar system with life. Mine and process resources from the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and beyond to support an increasingly self sufficient space civilization.

Extrapolation was designed to answer questions like:

  • "What kind of infrastructure would be necessary to build a rotating space habitat with thousands of inhabitants?"

  • "Is it more practical to mine resources from the asteroid belt or from Mars?"

  • "Does it make more sense to spread a space civilization out across the solar system, or to concentrate it into a few locations? What kind of resources would be sent across the solar system?"

  • "What kind of relationship would a space civilization have with Earth? How dependent would it be on Earth, and how could it benefit Earth?"

Extrapolation is set in a 1:1 scale model of the Solar System, including real planet topography data from NASA and thousands of real asteroids. In contrast to many space games which focus on the technical details of rockets and life support, Extrapolation tries to focus on strategic issues without glossing over the fundamental differences between travel in space and on Earth.

  • Launch resources using realistic orbital dynamics, taking into account fuel consumption and delta-V.

  • Build orbiting and surface based space habitats and factories. Choose between polar and equatorial orbits (or something in between), taking into consideration the launch cost from different surface locations to these orbital locations.

  • Send resources back to Earth to combat climate change

  • Build realistically sized Space Elevators, O'Neill Cylinders, electromagnetic mass drivers, and more, and see how useful they are for your goals.

  • Use orbital mirrors to illuminate solar panels on the night side. Beam power from orbital power stations.
