What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're building the world's most fun + effective language learning game. But language learning is huge! So, we're Early Access releasing with some parts of language available to learn, and some languages.

The languages included in this release include learning Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, Spanish, French and Italian, with a focus on nouns, phrases, adjectives and some specific grammar lessons.

After releasing in Early Access, we plan to add the ability to learn English from any of these languages. We also plan to add more learning features, so that people can learn more parts of a language. What content this is will be informed by our players' and Discord community's thoughts.

The goal is to build and enhance this game in public with the feedback and support of the community, so we can continue building the Noun Town ecosystem, in the same way we have been continuing to expand and improve our separate VR Noun Town experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're looking to keep the game in early-access for somewhere between three months and a year, as we listen to Early Access players + work out what is important to their learning.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add more languages (including learning English from other languages), more language learning features, and cool features like syncing your learning across Noun Town games.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current stage of the Early Access version is a fully playable game, where people can learn Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, German, French and Italian! The limitations are that some additional languages are not available, learning English from these languages is not available, synchronising your save with other Noun Town games is not available, and some additional gameplay modes are not currently included.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Prices are not planned to change when we leave early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want to get feedback from as many Early Access players as possible to see what they like + what they want to add and improve as we seek to make the best language learning game. Part of this will involve using the Steam Community forum, while another is asking people to join our 10,000+ Discord community.”

About This Game

🏆 From beginner to winner - start from scratch and learn 1,000+ words and phrases in English, Japanese, German, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish (MX), Spanish (ES), French, Italian, Ukrainian, Russian, Greek, and Egyptian Arabic.

🎮 No grinding, just gaming - play the game and your learning just happens.

🔈Speak like a native - talk to 16 characters using speech recognition to nail tricky pronunciations, removing the anxiety of making mistakes in public.

Thousands of gamers use Noun Town to speed up their language learning. The award-winning program uses the latest in science and tech to make learning fast, fun, and actually stick. Noun Town is also updated regularly with free DLCs, quality of life improvements, and regular bug fixes.

Kickstart your language journey without an expensive never-ending monthly subscription, and without waiting for...the...adverts...to...end on your phone.

Learn 1,000+ common words and phrases you need to speak like a local, including hundreds of nouns, adjectives, numbers, colors, days of the week, directions, and more.

As you learn you bring color back to Noun Town island, visually reminding you of your progress and helping to free the citizens of Noun Town.

Lock in your learning by regular testing. An automated spaced repetition system means you practice at the best possible times to drill the vocab into your brain (similar to Anki).

Beat your high score in the "Learning Rush" revision game, serving customers as they ask you for items in the foreign language.

Play in 11 areas, learning relevant vocab in each area, including the café, beach, farm, food store, etc. Learn the word for "coffee" in the café, "plastic bag" in the food store, or "goat" on the farm. Explore the island and discover new vocab while moving between areas.

Expand your vocab with action-packed mini-games and fun puzzles. Hit crazy robots to learn foreign numbers, plant flowers to learn the names of colors, and drive a delivery bot to learn foreign directions and locations. Each simulation is expertly designed to teach a different type of vocab.

Ask NPCs questions with your voice and hear replies from native speakers in a range of different voices, just like in real life.

Roleplay lessons with NPCs written by native teachers, preparing you for real-life conversations. Order a coffee in a café, inquire about food in a food store, and more in real-world simulators.

Build relationships with NPCs like in cozy games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. The more you interact, the friendlier the NPC becomes - learners get to practice formal and casual conversation types as the relationships develop. NPCs include a cat called "Pishi", "Bob" the most boring person in the world, a kind old lady called "Yaya", and 13 more each with their own unique personality.

The Noun Town "Streak" and "Daily Goal" systems keep you on track so you don't stray from your language learning education.

Steam Deck rating: "Verified". The game has been optimised for SteamDeck - it's fully functional and works great with the built-in controls and display.
